Does anyone have any practical experience of driving a 'Seven' with an 1100 Crossflow and Type 9???

I'm 99% of the way to doing it and someone has put a fly in the ointment and told me it will be REALLY gutless and I'd be better off with a 4-speed......

I'm actually fitting a Type 9 because it fits the chassis better.

I have a locost with a 1.3 crossflow, with a 4 speed box its fun but it lacks the giggle factor ! will be swopping engine for more power, I think you will get fed up with a 1.1 in no time
easier to change engine before its fitted !!

I believe Ben Copeland has an 1100 in his car until he gets it through sva. Not sure how far he is with it as I've not spoken to him in a while..

Ferg,

I've heard the same view of the 4-speed! In other words, it's a useful box that's good for hooning around lanes, etc.

I have the type 9 5-speed - I'm out of 1st in seconds and never return during normal driving. 5th I only use when zooming down the big roads - and that's not very often (apart from the A12/A14).

Actually my crisis moment has now passed. I have consulted with someone who's knowledge of such things is, in my opinion, second to none and he has declared my original informant "a Bu**shi**er"!

Ist and 4th are near as dammit the same, 2nd and 3rd are slightly different and 5th is overdriven.
The way I see it is that it *might* just struggle to pull 5th...no big deal...but in a car much lighter than the Escort it has a fair chance of doing so.

You're right about the 1>4 gears in the 5 speed. Not a lot different to the 4 speed.

I did a locost with a 1L Fiesta engine on a 5 speed a couple of years ago, for a youngster. You should try and get a 4.1, or better a 4.4 diff, to give you a bit more enjoyment, and 5th will give it some legs on the motorways and big A roads. You might find a 4.6 or higher back end with some of the rally fellas, which would be even better.

I found it had to be going about 40 before you could put it in 5th with any success.

Sorry I can't help with the gearbox, I'm clueless with that kind of stuff.

BTW, if you don't know who I am, I chatted to you a while ago by email about a Libra or kit car for when I'm 17.

My memory of the type 9 is the gaping chasm between the gears. 2nd to 3rd was worst if I remember correctly. Not what could be called sporting at all.

Having said, I will be using a type 9 in the new car because that's what's available. I suspect it will feel terrible after the GTM which had an actual CR gearbox.

Unless you have a very short rear axle ratio or a massively powerful engine 5th gear dosen't really come into the performance stakes ---- its an "overdrive" ratio for reduicng engine rpm when cruising -- the maximum speed will be reach in 4th or sometimes if you look at old Autocar road tests on 1960s and 70s production cars 3rd gear.

4th gear ratio is the same on a ford 4 speed as a type 9 ---- in fact its is the same 99.99% of RWD cars througout the world 1:1 direct drive

Almost all Ford mainstream RWD gearboxes use much the same first 3 ratios --- the main exceptions being the world famous semi close ratio 2000e and Rocket gearboxes which longer first gears and slightly longer second gears.
The type 9 used on the 2.8 V6 also a had semi-close ratios.

A proper close ratio gearbox is a very big advantage in a very light sports car with a tuned engine --- much more so than a n extra 5th gear.
