after losing alot of sleep and alot of plondering i've decided to rebuild the xflow
specs afterwards will be:
1760cc
valves oversized to the max
double valve springs
kent bcf3 camshaft
adjustable cam gear
head ported
lightened flywheel
complete engine balancing
shortened sump + breather catch tank
i decided to keep the kent and not replace it with the toyota 4age i got as it would require new gearbox, new engine mounts, new exhaust, new intake,
new $$$$$$
so please hold thumbs that the next two weeks will go smooth without too much troubles.

do you have the strong 711M block?
if you are going that way, then add edis/megajolt ignition to the list.
I suspect that as he's in South Africa, and the engine is 1760, that he may have the, even stronger, AX block.
Definitely worth a rebuild!
I'd concur with the above, and go for Megajolt and EDIS, maybe push the boat out and ditch the Dellortos in favour of bike throttle bodies with
Megasquirt.
As for adjustable cam gear, I wouldn't. I'd use the old offset dowels in a duplex set up. Once it's set, that's it. Adjustable
ones can only come loose, and with them being behind the timing cover, it's a pain to put right.

I'm at the stage of collecting bits for a 1700 rebuild - poss next winter project.
I'm only short of a duplex timing set - keep missing them on ebay! and a decent cam. (got a kent A2, but have been advised it's not
particularly good in a crossflow, more a pre crossflow jobbie)

As you're in SA, you could try and find an AX crossflow block...these can be bored out further than the 711M and were only put in South African Cars....

Marcus, would a kent BCF2 cam be any good for you?, got one brand new in box for £50.00 going to take it to Stoneleigh with a few other parts
i got a cam gear cover that can 'open up' without removing the whole cover
but i do agree with you, might have it welded to position - i just want to use it cause its got the double chain and gears

i was looking at the date now when i started this thread, 3/5/06
one year later and its finally done! ( i only started two or three weeks ago tho)
its now a:
1660cc kent
BCF3 cam
double adjustable cam gear
double valve springs
V6 valves - they SO BIG!
head ported
new pistons, bigends, smallends and mains
cossworth baffled sump
40's Dellorto's
Electornic dizzy with V6 sierra ECU
OH and a beefy 3core new radiator, engine runs just above 80 degrees, cant get it over 90 degrees - sweet
i've done about 150km's on the motor thus far after the rebuild, rain it stopping me from taking it out for the past week
so in the garage i decided to make a few changes to the rear arches:

i cut out 40mm from the rear arches, dropped it off this morning for filling and painting

oh, engine after rebuild:
also i put in new engine mount rubbers, the bottom of the sump is now in line with the bottom of the chassis - i had to take a bit off the oil filler
cap for everything to fit in again

i could only get 60tho oversize piston,
i wanted 90tho
Of course 90 thou would have given you 1690. All the way out to 85mm which is OK on the AX block would have given you your 1760 but also a big hole in your pocket!
now if someone in the uk wants to buy an AX block, i've got one sat in my garage waiting for offers
