GearBox and Engine chassis measurements
Dave Bailey - 25/3/07 at 09:32 PM

Fitted my Engine and gearbox today for the first time and have had to drop the mount slightly to get clearance on for the bonnet. This means that both the sump and the bell housing are below the chassis rails. What can I get away with safely. Engine is Zetec ST170 with dry sump and type 9.

Pictures in archive.... bell housing is about 35-40mm below the chassis rails.

Mine is the same (although different chassis) I was going to chop the sump, but i reckon it makes little odds with the damn bellhousing floating about at the same level.
Had thought about raising the engine and putting a bonnet bulge on to allow it though.
Not sure yet what I'll do, just live with it probably!

Cheers

Hi, Dave.

My Raceline sump and the bellhousing are 2" below the chassis rails. I plan to make a sump guard to offer some sort of protection.

Hope this helps.
Shaun

I was thinking along the same lines. Would be nice to have something exotic like Carbon but not sure that my pocket will run to it!

Might be worth egttign hold of a mini sump gaurd made of Dural. If you get the right grade it's listed as armour plating! Mine only cost £65 for the mini, and it should fit nicely under a seven. Mine even has bolt on mount brackets, so it can be positioned where ever you need it. I've bottomed the mini out all over the place and only ever put two deep scrapes in it in 2 years of driving.
