here's one for you lot,,,
today at work, whilst standing on the landing of the prison where i work, ( im a screw not a con ), i suddenley had an idea for a bike
engined car, to solve the problem of reverse gear, but i have no idea if it is stupid or not, my question is can an MT75 gear box be used, for the
reverse gear, an if so, what gear would be used for forward gears with the bike engine, now some one tell me, is it a stupid idea ?
cheers
mark
Not stupid, it has been discussed before

It has its advantages, but the weight tends to negate them somewhat
30 forward gears and 6 reverse! Yep thats a stupid idea.

Surely there must be a way of removing the forward gears and just retaining the reverse?
One of Ned's mates used a 4 speed escort box in the tunnel 'backwards.
That allows the reverse gear and if put into an intermediate gear it gears the car up for cruising.
Still goes like the wind apparently.
Then you just need to remove the 20Kg of gearbox casing and bingo
4th gear in ford boxes is usually 1:1, so ideal for going forwards. You can then use 5th as an overdrive for cruising. Even if you took the other gears out, it would still be heavier than a reverse box and if you had to have all the coupings made to join the bike's sprocket output with the gearbox input, it might not be much cheaper.
So with 6 reverse gears; None of us would be stupid enough to try them all...would we?

hasn't the dp1 or the v8 bec atom dennis is working on got a mt75 box? dpcars.com
The V8 may do but then it doesn't have an integrated gearbox like a normal bike engine, so it needs a gearbox anyway.
As other have said the main disadvantages are weight, packaging and additional transmissions losses, hence why not many people have bothered doing it.

Does anyone remember the Austin Champ? Built for the army, RollsRoyce engine and 6 gears..forward and reverse. Plenty of national servicemen got in
trouble for testing the reverse and fliping them.
