I have had a transmission clunking for a while, I thought it was possibly the backlash in the diff or the driveshaft CV joints, but today I seem to
have partially figured out what the problem is.
The layshaft/input shaft (whatever you want to call it) seems to be knocking. When the clutch is engaged in neutral a knocking can be heard from the
gearbox. When the clutch is disengaged the knocking stops. I initially thought it was the release bearing rattling, but it doesnt stop with light
clutch pressure.
A new spigot bearing was fitted to the crank when the engine was overhauled.
My guess is its the layshaft bearing. Any other ideas? Its a pretty loud knock, i.e. it can be heard over the engine noise! The good thing is it
doesnt seem to be getting worse at the moment - fingers crossed...
Next question, anyone got a good (lowish mileage) type 9 going spare?
Cheers,
David
There was a rebuilt box in the for sale section recently. Does this mean you won't be at the sausage meet tomorrow? Looking forward to seeing your car there.
Nah, I'll be there. It doesnt seem to be getting any worse at the moment, so will take it easy and hope it holds up
If I dont make it, you
know why!
