What can i use to attatch the engine crane to the engine to remove it?
Iv heard of some people using seat belts

seat belt or some tow rope thats what i used to put the it in with. andused it to take it out of the sierra ....

Always used blue nylon rope doubled around a few times from the intake/exhaust studs on the head. Most engine have lifting eyes somewhere aswell.

I've seen seat belts used but being a complete novice at this game I bought some certified 1 tonne capacity hoist straps from Machine mart for about £10

No problem lifting a pinto engine, hope that is of help

I've used chain from Homebase. You can put bolts etc through the links. I have used seatbelts but was a bit dublious about the knots.

I Second the blue nylon rope idea. It's also easy to knot etc if you need to shorten.

At my local Netto they're selling AA branded "towropes" for £1.99.
They're yellow nylon straps with big steel hooks at each end, plenty strong enough for an engine.

I realize this is a locost forum, and that you guys arent playing with big heavy engines, but come on guys
Buy (or build) yourself an "engine leveler".

They are only $30-80 and they make engine removal an easy, one man job with less chance of damaging things. Ive done lots of hotrod work (big engines, small holes) and I would never be w/o a leveler.

BTW, nylon straps are certainly strong enough, so long as they dont touch oil, or a sharp edge. Engines tend to have lots of both so use caution. I prefer chain over fabric for that very reason. It would be...... upsetting to drop a good engine because the strap failed.

i have a leveller but do i not still need something to go round the engine?

Well, generally they come with 2 chains and brackets to bolt to the engine.


Mine is similar to that, but Ive added 2 hooks as well to speed things up. One drawback though, is it adds about 12" to the height you need your crane to go up. So if you have a small crane, make sure youll be able to clear the nose. I have a rather large crane (ahem) so its not an issue for me .

Hire a leveler . Remember a Jag engine weighs a bit more than most ! I have used nylon rope, seat belts etc to lift engines but I had one failure with nasty results. Never again. At the very least use a decent chain and shackles and don't rely on cheap fold up cranes, they fold when least expected.
