Pinto Cam Belt
ash_hammond - 14/10/07 at 08:46 PM

Guys,

If the cam belt was to break on a 2.0 Pinto with Standard Valves and Pistons whats the chance of no engine damage happening?

- Ash

It's non interference as I understand so no damage at all.

macdave69 - 14/10/07 at 08:52 PM

I got away with it in a pinto engined rally car years ago. Best way is to whip the cam cover off and check for obvious damage, then try a new belt.

omega 24 v6 - 14/10/07 at 08:56 PM

As said on a std engine it SHOULD be ok .

ash_hammond - 14/10/07 at 08:59 PM

It has a Piper 285 cam in it.

mitch2b - 14/10/07 at 09:08 PM

exhaust valves are probably ever so slightly bent, happened to a mate a few months ago,
but it is a 2,1 with piper 285, so the head may have been skimmed too

Fit new cambelt, remove spark plugs, turn over by hand. If it turns over ok ( If a problem then remove head ) then do a compression test. If compression test ok (If not ok then remove head ) fit plugs, smile and start engine.

Evening Rich

My U2U does not seem to work.

Yep i am getting used it, done 25 miles over the weekend - weather has not been great. The joiner who is doing my loft wanted a ride - managed to scare him so things cannot be that bad

bigrich - 14/10/07 at 09:53 PM

tell me about the bl--dy weather. had all day on my own, no kids and it drizzles all day. so had to watch motorsport all afternoon instead, (maybe not so bad after all)

ash_hammond - 14/10/07 at 10:03 PM

Well i left the house at 7.30pm for a quick run over to a mates at Birley since it was dry. To find my self stranded on the Park Way next to the Handsworth turn off.

Car is now safely back in its home - one or two cars nearly twated it

bigrich - 14/10/07 at 10:05 PM

give us a yell mate if you need a hand sorting it out.

ash_hammond - 14/10/07 at 10:09 PM

Cheers Rich will keep u you posted

DaveFJ - 15/10/07 at 08:38 AM

As completely standard it is non interference however I'm pretty sure that with the Piper cam they will interefere... I have a FR34 cam and have skimmed 1mm off the head to raise CR - when i checked my valves now lift about 4mm clear of the head - I was a little worried abotu them hitting the pistons but I seem to be OK.....

DarrenW - 15/10/07 at 09:42 AM

Bad luck Ash. Was it a new belt that snapped? Have you fitted the front cover?

Ive just had a belt trashed (luckliy didnt snap) after getting gravel or similar jammed in. Cant fit the cover easily after fitting the megajolt VR sensor.

flak monkey - 15/10/07 at 11:37 AM

Snapped the belt on mine with an Fr33 cam in and it didnt do any damage, but that was only at tick over. Does depend on if the head has been skimmed.

As std there is zero chance of piston to valve contact. With some high lift cams there is.

david walker - 15/10/07 at 10:02 PM

What's tickover got to do with it?

At 900revs/min the pistons are going up and down 15 times per second!

:{THC}:YosamiteSam - 16/10/07 at 02:28 AM

if its a 2.1 it may well of been decked too - so will almost certainly foul the valves - oversized valves? will hang lower again
