Header tank filling up
saigonij - 20/1/08 at 09:23 AM

Hi,

brief history.

Zetec. Top Hose outlet of thermostat housing to top rad inlet.
Bottom hose of engine outlet ( water pump ) to bottom inet of rad.
The bottom hose then has two take offs - 1 to the exhaust side small 19mm take off on the thermostat housing, and 1 to the inlet side small 19mm take off on the thermostat housing.

on the inlet side hose ( that goes from the small 19mm take off to the bottom hose T piece ) i have another T piece which goes to the header tank.

My issue is, with the engine running, everything is fine - water lever in the header tank is normal.

as soon as i give it revs, the header tank fills up right to the top...

this cant be good? Any ideas why? Have i plumbed it in wrong? ( i read all the zetec plumbing guides on here and used that )

Have a quick think and look I came up with this...

Linky

On first looks it appears to be the same issues and a cure...

well, it looks like i have it exactly as they have suggested, so i think that either

1) my expansion tank is too small or
2) i have over filled it...

i think a bit of both, as the expansion tank is off a corsa i think, but when in "rest position" the level of the water only just reaches the bottom hose connector???

any other thoughts?

Air in the system somewhere.

Does it throw water out when it gets hot, could be headgasket, though unlikely.

The header tank could be to small, I found that with mine if filled to far it blows out water but levels off near the bottom of the tank.

found the answer tonight...

i realised that the header tank was plumbed in right, but as follows ;

Expansion Tank ---------------------- Engine
|
|
|
|
Bottom Hose

basically, the water pump pumps the water in to the engine, then it would come out of the top thermostat bypass, and because the expansion bottle and the bypass pipe are connected on the straight part of the T piece, it was all to easy for the water to go straight in to the expansion bottle, rather than go down to the bottom hose....

so i put the small T piece back down by the bottom hose, and ran a new pipe back up to the expansion bottle, so its not directly in the route anymore...

and it works...

yeay!
