Engine out
Miks15 - 20/1/08 at 09:24 PM

Finally got the engine out of my BMW. The engine is an M40 1.6 litre out for a 1991 BMW 316. It is covered in mud though so a good clean needed and then i will strip it down, paint and rebuild (hopefully with some preformance parts)

Been a good day

You'll find bugger all out there for the M40. Best off looking for a 1.8 M43, or find a 16v M42 or M44...

suggests a cam (and about 20Bhp) is available.

It looks like you get about 100Bhp as standard.
120Bhp then
Obviously it depends how heavy the engine is but 120Bhp in a Locost is going to be fun (even if a BEC engine would be half the weight!!!)...

i had a feeling i would get someone suggesting a BEC But i would like to keep as it is obviuosly cheaper. i will take a look at those cams thanks alot

I've used one of those in an M40B18 (don't think it's actually available for the M40B16?).

It's a 278 profile cam which does make the engine a bit peaky unless you lighten the flywheel to get it revving faster. It'll also give closer to 8-10bhp unless you go aftermarket ECU or have a new chip burnt for the stock ECU. Incidentally, piper claim 14bhp for the 278 Ultimate profile, not 20...

Either way, at least you'll have plenty of engine upgrade options open for the future

Enjoy undoing the exhaust manifold from the head, ------------ the studs tend to break.

Confused but excited. - 21/1/08 at 01:21 PM
