Transmission fluid
givemethebighammer - 26/10/03 at 08:48 PM

I know this has been discussed before but what is the best stuff (brand and type) of oil to fill

1. My sierra 3.62 LSD unit

and

2. My Type 9 Gearbox

seem to remember EP80 (90?) for the diff
and automatic transmission fluid for the gearbox- I may be wrong.

thanks

You don't want to put ATF in a box needing hypoid!

Going by the book ford recommends viscosity SAE 80EP (Duckhams Hypoid 90)

Newer type 9's they recommend Semi Synthetic Duckhams Hypoid 75w/90s

1.9 litres

Rear diff is Duckhams Hypoid 90S (SAE90 to GL5 specs)

0.9 litres or 1.0 litres if its LSD

Hope that helps, don't help me though as im running straight cut!

Cheers

thanks

found out today that the ATF was a "dealer" trick to shut customers up who moaned about their gearboxes being hard to operate in the cold. Apparently the ATF solved the issue but at the expense of a much shorter gearbox life. But as the story goes by the time the gearbox actually failed the car was either out of warranty or had been sold on !!!

Urban Myth or Truth ?

ps how do you tell and older type 9 from a newer one ?

might be a problem if you don't know the donor age, i'm not quite sure what year they introduces the 14 engine and the mt75 box, i should do as i'm an interford/xroc forum member

some boxes still retain the metal strip with number information which could used to identify age but i'm guessing that your box will have lost that a while ago

I'll try and find out some info ...

Cheers

Use fully synthetic 75W90 in both.

The ATF trick was used by Land Rover which prompted the bearing manufacturer to state that all warrenties were invalidated.
