whats the best and whats the cheapest? just read an old retro ford mag, they said v power was better than any additive but a mate of mine was testing the tesco version (in his moslers)and reconed it was better and cheaper .
Was'nt there a proper test a few week's ago (maybe done by the AA ?) that said these expensive `super fuel's` were a total waste of
money.......
retro ford tested a mk2 escort wi pinto
using standard unleaded first then 4 different octane boosters inc.winns the additives gave around 4bhp increase over standard but for a comparison
tried vpower which gave around 7bhp more and it worked out cheaper per ltr

I use Sainsbury's Super Unleaded in my converted-to-unleaded x-flow simply because it allows me to set the timing to the same as when it used
leaded petrol - in other words, I have to use a retarded map for regular unleaded. Fortunately I use Megajolt, which has 2 switchable maps...
Shell V-power behaves like super unleaded as far as the timing's concerned - I've seen no other benefits. My tintop does seem to run better
on Shell's regular unleaded though, rather than the supermarket stuff.

Depends really what you are using it in and if you are going to get a mappable management system set up specifically to take advantage of the higher octane rating. I had my old Zetec powered car mapped on Shell Optimax which was 98.1RON and stuck to that. Whilst Tesco's high octane fuel might have the octane rating, it wont have all the additive packages of Shell, BP, Esso fuel etc etc.
my imprezas have always ran on either optimax now v-power, no they are not a waste, i can tell the difference, especially when i used to go to the
isle of man _2003/4/5_ when the best you could get was super unleaded( i believe you can now get v-power in the i.o.m.)

Funnily enough, I took my Subaru into the garage the other week, I was concerned as every now and then, it sempt to be holding back on full boost,
they checked everything out, I even took the Tech out for a test drive with the PC plugged in to check all the sensors and stuff, but he said he
couldn't find anything wrong with it. They did say that the ignition had retarded itself a little, and this could be a result of poor quality
fuel!!
I told them I only ever use BP ultimate!! and they have advised to use Shell optimax and see how it goes!!
I suppose they could be fobbing me off, time will tell, I just want to get it sorted before the warranty runs out !!
a member of the SIDC did his own tests as regards to octane rating.

Unless you remap or re-jet you will get no performance gains from these fuels. If your vehicle has an ECU that can make use of these fuels then you
will notice a gain.
My 2006 Fireblade runs like a dog when using V-Power on standard ECU, as did my Mazda 2001 323F and my new Mazda 5.
My CBR600 race bike prefers standard unleaded (105BHP opposed to 101BHP on V-Power).
it makes a difference on turbo cars and i use an additive when running nitrous on my car to help stop detonation as its very high cr 11.3 one of my lads runs a red top powered astra and thinks it pulls a bit better on optimax
Oh, and it works on two-smokes as well - It broadened the very narrow power band on my RG250 from 2,500RPM to 3,500RPM.
all they did on the pinto escort was alter the advance

I ran an MR2 turbo a few years back, these have an electronic wastegate so boost is regulated by the knock sensors once you get rid of the fuel rail
regulation (again electronic, jap stuff is great).
With unleaded it would achieve around 0.9bar, with shell optimax this rose to 1.2bar so a considerable difference.
I have never noticed any difference in power on my unboosted cars, although maybe a little better economy.
