make sure the all electrics work, see if the engine sounds like a diesel esp on start up,that will be the cam variator and check when the timing belts were last changed

I had a 98 Cloverleaf that I've now swapped for a 2.0 TS 147 (same motor). I had 3 years pretty much trouble free with mine, apart from a problem with power steering pump when I first got it and a sticky handbrake when it was very cold. Other than it was spot on, pulled like a train in all gears. It responded very well to a full stainless exhaust and a carbon filter with cold air feed.

I swapped it for the 147 which has the same 2.0 TS motor but with that I have had issues, albeit could have been prevented. When the car was originally sold in 2001 the timing belt period was set at 72k miles. However, they recalled that and changed it to 36k but mine didn't come with a revised book or info pack and at 44k it went ping!!! Garages wanted £2k to repair but did it myself for £500 which included someone else putting new valves in and skimming the head. Other than that the air con is a bit dicky but in general it's a good car.

Also try the alfa145.com forum I think they have a buyers guide on there.

Also check out http://www.alfaowner.com
Beware! Alfa ownership is addictive! (I'm on my second inside 12 months. First was a 2.0 156 and now I'm driving a 2.0 GTV Spider. Gives me a smile eery time I drive it)
As previously stated, make sure the cambelt and tensioners have been changed within last 3 years/36000 miles. Check suspension for knocking/creaking etc.

As said, belts and tensioners every 60K kilometers or 3 years.

Also make sure it warms up properly as the thermostats are also a weak point (and you need to buy a complete housing to replace it...) Also the MAF's and lambda probes go bad around every 60K kilometers. Not too expensive to put right, but annoying.

The 16 Twin sparks are also known to have an appetite for engine oil, although not all of them are. Mine's a 2.0 16V and does around 1 litre per 4K kilometers.
