first start up..
I am looking to start my rebuilt V8 next few weeks. Its a 3.5 with a mallory dual point and mallory coil. I checked the points gap.Weber 500 carb out
of the box setting. I have the fuel line and pump in and the starter and battery.
The loom is away from being connected- the dash is done but not connected. So ( as I am looking for excitement in the gloom and cold) I want to rig
the engine up to start without connecting the loom up- I rebuit the engine 2 years ago and just want to check its OK before I finish off.
I have no idea how to set the timing of the engine- never done this before or whats differeny for the dual point. I thought I would start her with no
water in for 30 secs or so to ensure she runs. What advice can you give me on this approach and how to set up and test it works systematically?
thanks

My biggest concern would be priming the oil pump on the RV8.
Do you have a timing light ?

The sooner you fall behind, the more time you'll have to catch up.

First thing you do is prime the engine with oil if its got the older timing cover with gears at the bottom.
You pluck out the distributor and spin the pump gear clockwise with an electric drill.
Once it starts pumping the drill will slow right down as its a heavy load. If you cannot raise pressure like this then pull off the pump gear cover
and pack the cogs with vaseline (very important to use vaseline, not grease) and try again. Only when primed attempt to start.
Those carbs should be fine out the box, when the electric pump has run for a bit flick the throttle a couple of time and you should see fuel from the
acceleration pump being squirted in.
For the distributor its just like a standard item No1 plug lead against the correct cap post, time manually when the points gap opens. You can be
quite a bit out and the engine will run, if its does not fire quickly then assume 180 degrees out.

AS above make sure the oil pump is primed.
Having double checked 100 times I still got the timing 180deg out first time and got some very impressive flames out of the carb.
