Steering rack Problem

Slight problem, I went to clean up the steering rack yesterday take the track rod ends of new boots and a lick of paint. But couldnt get the old ends off they seem to be seized on the thread. I'm sure this a common problem considering the age of the just wondering how people went about getting theres off?

Cheers Toby

All the usual tricks - penetrating oil and leave overnight (or use vinegar if no p/oil readily to hand).
Heat the rod end up with a blow-torch, pair of mole-grips (or a pipe-wrench) on the rod and big spanner on the end, first hit both sides of the rod end around the thread with two hammers (one each side) to help break the seal.

You will probably need to get the link arms clamped in a vice to prevent them turning and a big spanner onto the flats of the TRE's after a good soak in proper penetrating oil. If that fails, then lots of heat onto the TRE's to hopefully get them moving (just make sure you remove the rubber boots first)

On a track rod end?? Both are right handed on my rack. Hub nuts are opposite handed to resist undoing in use but not steering racks.

You only get a left hand thread on old fashioned steering box sydstems where there are two ends on the same rod for example on a centre track rod or a drag link..

Is it the track rod ends that are stuck or the steering arms? If it's the latter, check the joint between the rack and the steering arms. There is usually a slot on the rack and the steering arm is peened into it using a punch.
