How about shot blast and hammerite smooth? that way you can touch up as you'll inevitably chip it assembling?

I'm all for powder coat but if chipped its difficult to touch in.

POR 15, useless in my opinion, tried it once on shot blasted steel, peeled it off in one peice 5 days later, maybe its just not meant for clean blasted steel....

POR=Paint On Rust.

It does not adhere well to clean metal unless prepared using their metal ready primer.

Look up Rust-Olem far far better than hammerite, i did my chassis with the stuff and its been superb and i can buy it in a can or pots if i need to touch it up.

Yep used that, just watery stuff that seemed to rust the metal quicker than leaving it out in the rain. I just went back to etch primer on the blast prepped surface.

I degreased my chassis with their degreaser then coated with their metal ready, which phosphated the metal. POR-15 stuck very well in a few places and peeled off in sheets in others. I'll wait till the chassis gets a bit of surface rust before touching it up, then I'll coat it in underseal or waxoil or something.

Hammerite sticks will but chips very easily.

I used POR 15 on my engine and gearbox, followed the instructions using metal ready before POR15 and its a good as the day it was done and that's nearly 6 years ago.

i used epoxy mastic 121 on my chassis. it sticks like poo to a blanket on blasted or heavily sanded surfaces. i have yet to chip it druing assembly.

the key is the secret to a good coat of paint.

edit... i didnt even chip it when bashing the ali side pannels round the chassis rails.

I wish I had used the epoxy mastic. Instead I tried to save money and went for chassis black. Ive only got to touch it and it chips of like bits of egg shell.

my mate swears by POR, but his guidance is always to prep properly and paint with red oxide first - have seen the results he gets and looks good a long time after. Never used it myself, I use hammerite smooth, applied by gun - yes it can chip, but as long as it's fully gone off it's not hard to repair, and the finish can be very good.

I used POR-15 for my chassis and I'm very happy with the results. Preperation as per instructions is key, using POR's degreaser followed by Metal Ready, which leaves a powdery zinc coating for even more rust protection.

The finish looks great too, even when brushed on. I top coated with POR-15 Chassis Black and it looks exactly like powder coat. Just be carefull when painting on the second coat of POR-15 as it runs very easily on the smooth first coat.

The only downsides are that it's quite time consuming and not much cheaper than powder coating.

Unless the chassis is shot blasted properly then powder coating just peels off in sheets. Guess how I know? Will probably strip the car to the bare chassis this winter to sort it out.
