OT R.C. car battery charger??

My grandkids have been given a VERY large radio controlled F1 car, (one meter long, approx, Jin Hong Long made in China)), but the battery charger is missing. I have done a search on Google but cant find anything big enough. The battery pack has 14 1.5V cells, so I recon I need a 21V charger. Anybody come across such a charger, and can point me to where I may be able to get one. Regards Ray

www.ripmax.com

do everything you could ever think of. what type of battery is it. LIPO, nimh, nicad, pb....

the type of battery will determin what charger you need.

if it has a lipo battery keep the battery outside in a metal container as they quite fequently go up in flames.

maybe a little rewireing would allow you to charge it as 2 7 cell packs which quite a few rc chargers can handle. lipo's only tend to go up in flames when mistreated. Nimh cells explode more a like a shotgun cell epecialy the new higher capacity cells they came close to being banned by the british radio car association a couple of years back

There are no indications on the battery pack as to what they are, but I assume that they are Nicad, seeing as the car is fairly old. They are currently, (no pun intended), holding at 14.4V, so well flat.
Pictures attached. Cheers Ray

You will likely struggle to find a simple charger for 14 cells, unless you can go back to the shop where purchased and get a replacement?

There are universal chargers available for RC models that will charger up to 15 NiCd/MiMh cells, but they aren't exactly plug and play as you have to configure battery type, number of cells etc. through a menu. They are also 12v powered rather than mains, so you'd need a 12v supply of a suitable current rating for mains use.

As Bob says ^^^

As you don't know the capacity of the pack you really need a "peak detect" type charger (auto switch off).

I use one that will charge almost any type of battery from a pair of AA's to Lipo's. It will do up to 14 NiCd's at up to 5amp.
Runs off a car battery or mains power pack.
It came from http://www.galaxymodels.co.uk £49.99 (see pic)
A very helpful shop. I suggest a phone call.

Similar can be found at http://www.rctronics.co.uk
1 to 15 cells is £39.99, 1 to 27 cells, 74.99

As NiCd's are "old hat" you may wish to update at some stage, hence a multi type charger.

I'm not into cars so there may be better options, or cheaper.

Edit to add:- I can't believe the price of Mike's link.
If I'd have seen that first I wouldn't have posted. ( Must type quicker )

Never thought, I may have a brand new peak voltage charger but I'm not sure what voltage it'll do, in a box full of old stock ( I used to sell R/C cars).
I'll check for you when I get to work.
Cheers,
Bob

Right Ive got two types of peak charger one mains that will handle up to 9.6v the other a 12v type both made by Ripmax. Sadly I dont think either will do the job. If any R/C types are interested I will sort out a price for these with much cheapness.
It should be fairly easy to build a charger to do the job Chippy using a crow bar or clamp circuit to prevent over charge if you cant get fixed up off the shelf.
Cheers,
Bob

I feel your pain; I paid rather a lot more than that for my Turnigy charger

Very handy bits of kit, I've used mine for reviving dead laptop batteries as well as RC stuff. The only snag is that it's not very "kid proof" as you have to configure the battery type and charge current. Not so much of a danger with NiCd/NiMh, but would be nasty if charging LiPo's incorrectly.

Hi Mike
The outside of the chargers look so similar. It makes me wonder if the gubbins inside is the same, quality wise.

Are we just paying for the name, or do you get what you pay for?

I was fool enough to buy some cheap ink cartridges off eBay two weeks ago.
Printer display now says, "Idiot, now get me some proper ones".
