cleaning up sierra back plates
hi again everyone, merry xmas.
question, these back plates:
i have got rid of most of the surface rust on 1 side of both, since i took those photos, however, i have got through all my sanding belts and 2 of
these (which were a great disappointment btw) and still
could need another few hours work. the problem areas are the recessed parts which i cant get my finger sander in, i have seen sanding wheels but am
unwilling to buy anything else untill i am more confident it is worth buying. is there a chemical process which will help tackle these hard to reach
areas?
regards Ed.

don't write OT on a new thread title, you're creating the topic, everything you write is very much ON topic!

Get them shot blasted. If you collect a few bits that need doing and find a local blaster it's usually quite cheap (probably less than the cost
of another power tool), very quick and oh so much easier.

Electrolysis then a quick whizz with a wire brush in the drill. Look in my photos for a before and after. As easy as that.

you could send Liam a PM, I'm sure he'd point you in the right direction (or anyone else on here thats used it - there are quite a
few now)
personally I've had nearly all my donor bits blasted and powder coated, but I'm just down the road from a guy who does a really good job
of it.
the blasting is cheap enough, the coating isn't so locost if you paying someone else (so its just as well my kits not a locost then )

ok will do. electrolysis seems simple enough. bucket, car battery charger, wires, cathode to the object to be cleaned, water, soda crystals - 1 table
spoon for 5 litres of water, steel anode in the solution. turn it on? did i miss anything?
