When does a classic car stop being a classic car..

Ok.. my mind is idaly dreaming...

I have a 1972 TVR.... which is tax exempt... Very nice.. and saves me about £400+ a year...

I have this weird desire to fiddle with the car... I quite fancy a BMW straight 6 with 6 speed gearbox, rollbar, redesigned suspension arms etc etc....

How much can I legally change on the car before:
A- I need an IVA
and
B- It no longer qualifies for classic car status (free tax)...

I dont want to have to IVA and I dont want to loose the free tax... so what can I do to the car?

You will never loose the historic vehicle status.

I put a Zetec in my MGB, changed the front and back suspension, MOT man never batted an eyelid at the mods. I think if you change the chassis, then you need IVA, if you use the standard mountings, don't add or take away anything you'll be ok.

It was registered in 73, but I had the heritage dating certificate stating manufactured 72, and got historic status.

MOT test is on the age of the engine or chassis, which ever is oldest, so you wont even get an emissions test.

as i understand, as long as the chassis isn't changed (don't know how that works with new engine mounts etc) then it shouldn't need IVA.

you'd only loose classic car status if it suddenly gets build after '74.

I heard a story about a local guy (Andy Saunders) who built a convertable Bentley,
apparently the dvla took away his v5 and told him it was significantly modified so need an iva .
personally I would have thought you could get away with most things if you dont have to put them on the v5.
things like a change in body type would be a no no, but uprating or changing suspension components should be ok.
obviously the purists will ban you from theyre little clubs for modifying a classic
but its your motor do what you want.
always worth considering making the mods bolt on that way they can always be reversed if the car is to be sold as an original later on

^ yep, engine sub frame would be a good idea, so you use the original engine mounts, BMW engine mounts to the sub frame. no chassis mods then, no risk of IVA.

use the original suspension mounts and you're good to go i'd say

Don't modify it, sell it to me and then get something else to play with.

I remember you had it up for sale a few months back. I also seem to remember Scootz expressing an interest, I guess it never sold then! I was very impressed with the car then but didn't get in touch as couldn't do anything at that point!

Why didn't you sell?

How about a swap for my Fisher Fury? Loads to play with on that including the boost!

ok slightly wrong above it was a roof chop on a Bentley and yes the dvla took away the v5 till a biva was done aparently you can get a £2000 fine or up to 24 months in prison but they normally just take the v5 away they probably use the same law that they use for people ringing cars
dont let this put you off as you didnt mention any radical body mods just thought you might find it interesting

I didnt try too hard to sell it... as im rather attached to it...Although for the right money....hey ho lol.... did you see the latest pics of it?

To be honest, I would rather find a completely shagged example of the same age and rebuild that with new engine etc... it does seem a shame tearing apart a reasonably authentic origional...

mhmmm....tricky!

Radical bodymods only force IVA if it's a "unibody"/"monocoque" design, i.e. no separate chassis....as by chopping the roof you're essentially modifying the chassis.

same here .not too sure about the underlying comment about a "completely shagged example" though
