Main fuse blowing when switching lights on??

Hi.. I had a problem a while back that when on dipped beam (on switch) onw ould be on dip and the other on high, switch the high beam switch and each one would reverse (high to low and low to high). Got several suggestions of wiring in bulb carrier etc. Came to check them and the bulb holder on one had melted on the block and also burnt the spade connectors. Took them apart disconnected the both headlamps but now a new problem!!

Even with no headlamp wiring attached under the nose cone when I press the switch the main 30 amp fuse blows near the battery. I guess Ive got a short somewhere but want advise on how to trace it without stripping all the wiring from its sleeving.

Ive jabbed my test meter into a bunch of what I think are the lighting live feeds to the back of the dash and several seem to be reading going to earth.

Where do I start now?

Out of those it would have to be switch as at the moment the bulb wiring is disconnected in the fron of the loom. I'll check the switch.

Is it possible the live has burnt out along anywhere and earthed.?

I dont know how it was wired by the builder but thought it would have blown a circuit fuse not the main. This blows and ALL power to the whole car is gone.

The fact that the bulb carrier melted and the spade connectors burnt strongly suggests that there was a problem to begin with.

Trouble is, without a wiring diagram it's tricky to work out where the problem might lie. Best option would be to take out any fuses / bulbs / relays etc and go through the bits of the loom one by one to work out where the short is.
