transmission jack ideas

been taking my gearbox out a few times lately, think a transmission jack type thing would be useful, however...

what would you all sugest?
can a normal trolley jack be converted to a type that can hold a gearbox steady?

been thinking of a motorcycle lift type thing, makro have them for aout £30 sometimes, they tend to be very tall though.

whats my options? somehow converting my trolley jack would be pretty good

ah cheers craig, i'd seen that on another site somewhere, but think it only works on one particular jack, which i don't have.

wonder if my current trolley jack (which is a pretty good one) can be converted in any way?

Surely you could fab a cradle up that replaces the pad on the top of your jack when you are doing the box http://tiny.cc/ud3yi

just went out to have a look. the pad on mine is in 2 bits, one iis part of the arm, and inside that sits a swiveling bit, which is just held in by a R clip. not sure how easy it would be to make one up. might be a bit wobbly

Yeah but remove the Pad and Blot the Cradle to the Top of the jack. you may need to drill a couple of holes but that should be a problem if you can make a cradle

Scot's do it better in Kilts.

hmm, i've got a bit of 3mm sheet steel, could put a hole in the middle of that to bolt to the jack, and curve it a bit round the gearbox for strength, that might so it well enough. its just not easy getting the gearbox in place coz of the weight of it, and the position you have to get in under the car. don't fancy being right under the gearbox when my arms give out

When I was a lad we used to just lay the box on our chest, slide under the car and lift it into position, they don't weigh that much!
