If it's a normal dvd player, it probably won't read it (unless it's a DVDR), you'll need to convert it to dvd, I use
"dvd santa".
If it can read divx etc. (or it's an iso/dvdr), "nero" or even windows (i think) can burn it straight to dvd.
What format is the film in (how big and what file format) ?

You can try and get winavi convertor
It will convert your avi file into dvd format .
You can then write this file to your dvd.

If you've got a PS3 or an Xbox 360 they will play AVI's so just burn it to disc or as above use Winavi or convertx to DVD to convert to
DVD.

Ditto quite a few DVD players to be honest.
- My £30 ronin box will do avi/mpeg/dvix/etc natively. Hence as said, no dvd authoring software needed, just burn a data dvd.
