Any major difference in blacktop engines ?

A friend needs a new head for his transit connect 1.8 blacktop zetec on a 2001 year & has been offered a complete 2004 1.8 engine from a focus.

Are there any major differences between the years - if any ??

Cheers !

I'm no expert but I thought they were all pretty similar.

Maybe small cam differences?

I know that the silvertop 1.8 and 2 litre are different, believe it or not we got a better BHP from a 1.8 head on a 2 litre than we did using the 2 litre

By putting a 1.8 head on a 2 litre you raised the compression ratio, simple as that.

Check the head part number on the side of the head above the exhaust manifold. There may be differences between pass car and commercial applications.

Not usually a good idea to swap between Silvertop and Blacktop as they have lots of differences.

As supplied by the factory there is absolutely no way the Silvertop and Blacktop heads are interchangeable. The cambelt tensioning pulleys are in different places for starters.

Swapping a complete engine is not a major issue, 1 modified engine mount, modifed alternator mount, idler pulley for alternator belt, Scholar kit to fit Silvertop windage tray/sump and a couple of coolant hoses were all I had to sort on mine when I swapped form Silvertop to Blacktop.
