Alternatives to Ford English axle
Currently running an English axle in a Blade engined car, which I race.
Looking to lose some unsprung weight, from the axle in particular. One option is to get an alloy diff nose, which is £££ and I hear of reliability
problems.
The alternative is to fit a different axle, with appropriate mount brackets etc.
So,anyone got suggestions for a donor for a live axle with:
* a similar track to the escort (2" wider would actually be ideal)
* a ratio of around 3.4 - 3.55 :1
* A weight significantly less than the English's 43 kg including diff & brake backplates
So far, I've looked at the BMC which is light but has issues taking the abuse and doesnt get any higher than 3.7:1 as standard (though you can get
higher ratios for £££ - the ones advertised are *too* high for my needs).

good call on the welsh axle
as to alternative axles, not sure on track, but what about the nissan variety, ie. 120y ect.
or the mazda ones from say, 79-80 626, or the rx-2,3,4,7 ones, although i'd say they'd be too narrow.

Hi Dave,
Don't know if this will solve your weight condition, but the Capri axle is approx 2" wider than the Mk2 Escort. It felt heavy enough when I fitted
it (& that was without rear brake assys).
