Ticking/ clicking noise from rear drive
Hi All,
I need some pointers before I start dismantling... I am getting ticking / clicking noise from the rear drive / wheel area of the car (std for Sierra /
drum set-up). It does not happen when cold just when the car is warmed up. It seems to be coming from one side only and is kind of like a stone stuck
in the tyre but it is too continuous to be this.
Is it:
worn or damaged brake shoes
wheel bearing.... (would these not rumble when worn?)
drive shaft UJ worn. If it is this are there any ways to check for a worn joint

good point... the noise does come from that area!
What do they sound like when there are going wrong? I am used to the normal lecky pump noise

Alex I'm not sure what they sound like when going wrong,but the ticking noise could be the pump..does it make any sound when the vehicle is
stationary ?? if so it's the pump !!

Just thinking about this... noise is related to the rotation of the wheel so it is not the pump.
Even with very slow movement of the car, there is a distinct click coming from the rear end.

That would be my answer too! ...Mine sounds as though it is behind me on one side,
but it did turn out to be fuel pump...usually when the fuel is getting just a bit low....
and only really noticeable when going along ....

My first thought was the UJ... what do they sound like when they are going?
From experience it is clunking sound - or perhaps this is when then get they really bad from a "normal car" with insulation and you cant
here the first signs of failure.

on a front wheel drive when a drive shaft/UJ is on it's way out on full lock they click or tick

Sierra drive shafts use a constant velocity joint, totally different from a universal joint , it could be a CV joint worn which would be consistant
with road speed

I had a strange ticking noise on one side only, took ages to find and turned out to be the stick on balance weights just touching the end of the
wishbone bolts.

I will have a look round at the weekend....
Is the CV joint easy to replace?? I did not make my car (although wish I had as I am gradually rebuilding it) and the trouble I have with spare parts
as I do not know the donor car parts of the car as they have been rebuilt or replace from the original

An update on the clicking noise...... the wheel bolts were loose
I am really embarrassed to admit this and it has never happened to me before by the bolts were just finger tight on 2 and loose on 2! I had done 150
miles on m/ways etc etc with one wheel loose and did not notice it other than the back end being more loose than normal which I thought the low temps
were the cause!!! I was in a hurry after doing some work on the car and did not check one side.
