Front Number Plates

Ok whats the script

Do I need a front number plate?

If so where do I fit it - Sticky or Real

Does it have to be "FULL SIZE" ?

Tractors /diggers/ Mbikes /trics etc don't have front plates!

I know for the SVA I don't need one or have to have a mount for one.

Scot's do it better in Kilts.

got pulled in my last car for not having one, and not sure a stick on one would be pass MOT, because it wouldn;t be verical.

As far as I am aware, front plates are required for a normal, modern, road car.

Sticky number plates arn't supposed to be used but most coppers, providing its in a sensible place/not obviously too small, wont bat an eyelid.

I have just put on a small 9"x3" show plate from http://www.myshowplates.com/ I'll wait and see if i get pulled!! They do different sizes so if i do get pulled i'll get a smaller than std one but no too small.

We've done thousands of miles over the last 2 years in ours, all without a front 'plate and never had a second glance from Plod.

I was asked about it by a Plod who'd pulled me for speeding, but I told him that I didn't need one because the car weighs less than 600kgs.
Be warned though, that probably wouldn't work with TrafPol

I prefer none to an illegal one, at least if you don't have one you can say it fell off, but they're a bit keen nowadays on dodgy fonts etc...

I had a very small one fitted, about 9inch long. I had a comment from old bill that is was illegal but no action was taken.

I have just replaced it with a standard one. I bought a plate with a GB logo but them cut the logo of to shorten the plate. Fits the nosecone just about right.

Some car designs just don't allow a front plate to look 'right' but common sense comes into play IMHO.
If it's obvious to Mr Plod that you have tried to comply with the law as much as possible (regarding size & position) he isn't going to hassle you. If however, you have a silly font making it difficult to read, then he will quite rightly ask you to get a proper one with the standard font)

spoke to a trafic plod about this last wednesday!

he said the plate has to be 1 inch wider than the letters
they have to be standard distance apart
but you can cut the top and bottom off if you like ! ( but not the letters )

An extract fro FAQs on DVLA website.
Are stick-on number plates legal?

No, number plates must meet the British Standard requirements and we are not aware of any self-adhesive number plates that are able to meet these requirements.
