AWD Locost Variant in the works...

Hey all, I'm new to the site and have been poking around with an interest further piqued by Ron's book...

Anyway, here's me project: an AWD 500+ hp car weighing in at less than 1500 Lbs (700KG) and with 50/50 weight distribution. The engines I'm considering using are the Nissan SR20DET from a Pulsar GTi-R, RB26DETT from the famous Skyline GT-R, and the Mitsubishi 4G63 form the Eclipse GSX (here in the US) or Lancer Evolution.

I guess I'm voicing this to see what you all think of the project... I allready have plans drawn and scale models built for the two layouts (transverse 4-cyl and longitudinal 6-cyl) and am trying to figure out which will give me the best results for the lowest cost. I have access to a free parts car (87 Acura Integra) and many parts will also come along with the front clip I'll guy when it comes time to build.

Lemme know what you all think or if there's a resource that I could explore as a precedent.

To my knowledge there are at least 2 4wd Locosts being built but I think they both have the Ford Sierra XR4x4 powertrain (tho' heavily modified). They both use the forum so may be of help.

Sounds like an excellent, if challenging, project to me! Can't help you with engine choice from the selection you give there, don't know any of them myself.

As has been said here many times, the further you stray from the plans in the book, the more complications you find. From the sound of it I imagine you have the experience necessary to tackle a project of the scale thats going to be.

All I can say is good luck!

Curious about the transverse 4 cyl option tho. Are you still basing your plans roughly on a seven type car, or are you planning something entirely different??

I know a guy in AZ who imports JDM Nissan Engines who would be able to get me everything I would need to make the systems work. We might accually start a "car company" together in the near future, but I'd need to get my schooling done and the prototype built first...

For those who don't know, the RB26DETT is a 2.6 Liter Twin-Turbo Inline 6 out of the Nissan Skyline GT-R that generates a claimed 280 HP (with stock dyno results showing 320 or better) and uses a high-tech tourque transfer AWD system. With the stock Turbos the motor can generate upwards of 600 hp on pump gas, and fully tuned has been known to dip into the 1000hp realm on pump gas. Despite the insane power levels, the engine does not see many US frames due to the impeadance of the Twin Turbo system in the space of the Left-hand drive steering system. Enter the RB35DET--the 2.5 Liter RWD Transmission counterpart to the 26, making slightly less power at 800 fully tuned (without Twin Turbo conversion)... For the slightly less adventurous, the SR20DET is the famed 200SX and Silvia Motor that has turned up in many American 240SX's, Datsun 510's, and kit cars. Fully tuned this 2.0 Liter 4 cylinder can generate a reliable 500hp in pump gas....

As for which I'll use in my car--I think that my best bet is to use a less exciting donor car like a 240Z, 240sx, or other cheap RWD car for the initial build, but with the frame engineered for the massive (5.5' or 1.75 meter long with transmission) RB series motors. This would leave extra room in front of the engine for cars besides the I-6 240 or 260Z, which could easily be consumed by pushrod front suspension until the proper RB or SR has been sourced and installed. I designed the frame and body before I ever heard of the Locost, and look completely different from the 7's. I am using Ron's book merely as a guide in the construction process and for further inspiration. As for the design of my car, I think it is better described as "BMW Mini gets eaten by TVR speed 12"

In regards to Alan:
I've been admiring your Meerkat for a little while now, and am very intrigued... My mom owns a worse-for-wear 87 Integra that she'd like to make into something "a little more fun to drive"
