Brakes Question

On my 205, the brakes have been slowly getting worse and worse, It's got to the point where I have to do something now.....

The problem is when I driving, and put the brakes on, the pedal hits the floor (the car slows down very slightly, but is hardly what you'd call a good braking effort)

Then I pump the pedal again, this time, the car slows down (still not properly though)

On the third Pump, The cars slows as it used to, and just before it comes to a standstill, the wheels lock (diagonal wheels)

So all in all, you need to pump the pedal three times in order to stop normally - which is harldy ideal, when you need to stop quickly.

My guess is that it's down to a faulty maste cylinder seal, but just thought I'd see if you guys have any ideas?

Thanks

Tom

Have you checked your brake lines? Are you losing fluid?

air in the pipes, pumping it heats up the air and increases the pressure or a lip seal in the master cylinder has become so worn it has flipped over and now working in reverse, happen to my cortina.

Also check if you have any fluid in the bottle

before you do the master check all your flexi hoses prefferebly wit someone else in the car on the pedal. Then check see if you are losing fluid. If it is a while since you changed the fluid or if you have been playing silly b*ggrs on a track then you could have cooked it or if the car has ben sat for a long time it could just be exhausted, i.e picked up too much water. I presume you have already done a full bleed round? if you have try again and see if you get bubbles. If you're rear flexi connector is at the top of your diff try cracking that joint and bleeding there as it is a high point. Once you are satisfied al these points are good and you have no leaking cylinders or calipers then think about changing the master.

Does the handbrake come up a long way? does the brake pedal improve if you pull the handbrake on and give the pedal a couple of pump then leave for a few seconds before applying the brakes? If so then I would suggest the rear brakes need attention , common problem , the auto adjustors do not operate correctly, the drums are probably badly worn if they are original although it may? be possible to get the wear ridge removed. Would recommend checking and adjusting at the very least before spending money on a possibly not needed master cylinder. Also check that the auto adjustor ratchets are not worn/siezed. Check that all bleed nipples are not siezed before bleeding brakes as siezed nipples are common

oh i just noticed that its a peugeot. if rear shoe's are totally worn slave pistons can actually pop out!!! as happend to a friends car. He lost his brakes and ran into the back of another car. Off course he couldn't use the handbrake to stop since that didn't work either...

Oh how I laughed cheap skate that'll learn him...

Thanks for all your suggestions guys, I'm going to try and sort it tomorrow/fri.

The fluid levels haven't dropped at all, tried bleeding them quickly, but there didn't seem to be any air - But I'm going to renew the fluid and start from scratch.

Having the handbrake doesn't make any difference - and its got discs on the back too - pads and discs are ok all round.

It has been thrashed on a trackday, but it was a good few months after the problem started happening.

John.... I have bought my old car ff the guy I sold it too - going to hopefully Mi16 it....should be a good winter project.

Thanks again guys

Tom
