huh you don't have to tell me...I tried that a few months ago, seemed to work fine at the time and we all got typing away, then for some unknown
reason we were told it didn't work. Never did figure it out, really annoying.

I was there for about 30 secs, there was one other person listed as being there who I didn't know so I bu**ered off.
Most people I know use msn, exchange addresses via u2u if need be.

Best way to do it is pick a weekly day/time for chat.
If the chatroom is giving you trouble, use this one:
http://www3.telus.net/public/corym/locost.html
Just enter a name (has to be non-registered so if you get a message saying to enter a password try another name) and you are set.
To the admin, parachat is pretty basic, and that setup is free to use so if you like, just copy/paste the source into your page and it should work.
