Does free antivirus work?

Does anybody know if this free antivirus software is any good?

http://www.pctools.com/free-antivirus/?ref=google_uk/

I need to sort my PC out soon and would prefer a free route if it works?

Personal fav by a country miles is Avira Free Av

It dosen't hog system resources, It dosen't give a pile of false posatives and dosen't look like the interface was designed by a 5 year old. it is also updated at least dailly.

AVG - been using it for years, trouble-free and hassle-free (as well as cost-free). Police departments have been using for years (I know this from first-hand) and it's bulletproof. The commercial version is expensive, the home version is a free download, updates itself daily, but you'll never know it's there (except you're virus-free).

You couldn't pwn your way out of a wet paper bag, with "PWN ME!!" written on it, from the "pwned take-away" which originally contained one portion of chicken tikka pwnsala and the obligatory free pwnpadom.

Ive used AVG for years, but it isn't free anymore [at least thats what keeps popping up on my PC]

I'm now using Avira Antivir which seems fine.
