Woohoo - it fired up

After fitting the bike carbs i managed to get her to fire up tonight Well chuffed. Too late to run for a while but a good moment nonetheless.

Just need to connect pressure reg (do i need one?), decide if i need choke cable, set up throttle cable

Then the fun begins hoping it runs OK under load on the road so i can get it back to Boggs for jetting

Many thanks to those who have given me the inspiration and to Boggs for the initial settings.

It sounded quite good.

You won't need a pressure regulator if you are using the bike fuel pump as it regulates itself. Aything else pumping and I would get one.

You should get away without a choke cable - a few dabs of the throttle should sort that.

Well done anyway.

Pat...

Nice work Darren

I fitted a choke cable but like Pat said couple of throttle dabs and its not required. The only time i used it was when i was starting it without taking it for a drive but dont even need to do that now i sorted the small air leak

Its a great feeling eh Darren, are you finding it silky smooth compared to the old pinto carb?

I using a ZX9 fuel pump that self regulates when the float bowls shut. Just a filter before the pump then again before the carbs.

Mine starts with no throttle or choke from cold no problem, and I haven't even started the jetting yet!

Thanks all.

Ive used ZX1000 pump so no worries there. It primes up then stops when pressure is sufficient.
It fired up no probs this morning (i couldnt resist). Bearing in mind i havent refilled coolant, set the tickover screw, fitted throttle return spring etc etc im pleased at how easily it starts. Being cold its a bit spluttery but so was the 38DGAS for the first few minutes. Quick pull of the choke lever, turn it over and she's away.

Sounds rather similar to a set of twin 45's. I love that sound, about as good as it gets on a 4 pot.

Cant wait to get the car out of garage now and give it a few revs to warm it all up and tune the settings. Ill probs need to tweak the ignition map as well. Only slight botheration now is no road tax - need to do battle with PO again today

Well done Darren!

and as above - are you using the bike fuel pump? If so (and it's up to the task of fueling the pinto) then it is self-regulating therefore no need of a fuel press reg. If not then you will definitely need one...

Steve

Ive just remebered ive not blocked the air bleed holes yet - oops. The ali rod is in the holes but not sealed - another small thing to add to the list.

160 main jets, needles in mid point, air screws 3 turns out. After ive done some road miles ill check the plugs.

Pumping the throttle won't work with bike carbs cos they don't have accelerator pumps!!!

However, it's true that often you don't need a choke...

i was wondering what advantage pumping the throttle would give. i assumed this would just move the butterfly and not put any fuel in until it fires - or am i wrong (ie will the needles move a touch under the cranking of the engine with the butterfly's open???).

Ill do some final fettling and then suss out what the new starting procedure needs to be.

Would i get into trouble giving it a little blast up the road with no bonnet fitted? Ive not cut out the filter hole yet (still building up the courage - it needs a big hole for the huuuuuge filter!!)

Easy to mark the hole.

Fit nose.

Fit Filter.

Cardboard template gaffa taped to bonnet.

Lift template (hinged on gaffa tape on the nose).

Fit Bonnet.

Lower template onto bonnet.

Cut hole.

Pat ;-)

Great idea Pat. I hadnt given it too much thought but that should work a treat. The complication in my head was that the filters are parallel to the engine (and centre line of car) but the bonnet follows the line angled sides - hence some of the filter doesnt stick out past bonnet line. Your idea should cater for this and at least allow a close cut out that can be fettled afterwards.

Might need to add strengthening to the bonnet as the cut out will be quite large (ive seen ST bonnets with ribs underneath in fibreglass - not sure if they use ali stiffener as well). I may also need to move a bonnet clamp as front one is very close.

I just wish the house dev wasnt getting in the way. I started the mods when weather was crap. Next day sun cam out! Holidays and house have made this a 5 week carb swap so far. At least its getting valued today to go on market so i should be able to finish the urgent jobs by this weekend.

I bet it rains the day im ready to road test
