Recommend me a lap top please!!!
I'm still in the process of fixing my PC. And that got me thinking about a new lappy. I need something to edit my Camcorder stuff and burn it to
DVD. As I spend a lot of time at work on nightshifts, a lappy would be ideal to make use of the 'spare' time!. I already have a cheap old
laptop for my Alfadiag and VAGCOM but I could easily convince myself I need a new(or newish) one. Especially if I sell my Laguna (see the For Sale
bit!!)
So I'd like you guys to recommend me a Laptop for doing all the things I want it to do! Mainly the video editing and a bit of wireless
tinterwebbery. I'm not too bothered if I go Mac or PC. I'm a tight get so second hand is not out of the question!!
Do not fail me guys......

I watched a program on the telly where they were reviewing a high spec Pc with some expensive software and a standard budget Mac lappy, on their
ability to edit HD camcorder footage. The Mac totally blew the Pc away, infact it wasn’t even close to the ability of the Mac which came with all the
software as standard. I was well impressed.

Second vote for macbook not the new air one the old one. can also run PC emulation in parallels or just run windows if you really must on Boot
Camp!

If I had more time to get up to speed on it so I understood how to do things as well as I do in Windows, I would be going Linux-based (e.g. Kubuntu),
as you can generally get away with a lower spec (i.e. cheaper) than you need for Windows. If you must go Windows, many people recommend getting the
latest version of XP rather than Vista.

IMHO...Im getting less and less enthusiastic about recomending PCs at work..
They just such a PITA,...
If your wanting a power house to do video and photo editing you cant go far wrong with a new apple notebook!

ISTR a couple of Linux distros that specialise in multimedia editing.

My computer at home is a Bell Pc about 3 years old and I've really had enough of it, actually I hate it. Clunky, huge, noisey,slow, badly built
and windows seems to get more corrupt each time I use it. Now it bombs out of word in a few minutes without backing up the documents so I loose the
lot. I bought a video card for uploading my old camcorder onto it and that doesn’t work after taking about 45 mins to install.
Then I go into the shops and see these Mac things and wonder where on earth the computer is, what that’s it?! Just a flat screen and keyboard…my jaw
just hits the floor

Get it from www.apple.com/ukstore.
There is a brand new model today.
Get the middle spec macbook to get the DVD writer(Superdrive). The standard ram is plenty. There is a refurbished store which often has reasonable
deals - obviously won't be any brand new ones at the moment. I G of ram is plenty. If you buy used (from ebay say), get an intel based model so
you can install MS windows if you really must. I'm still running a 1.3Hz G4 laptop - 4 yrs old and could do all you want.
I also reccomend the O'reilly book "OSX the missing manual - leopard edition" from here or amazon.

I can thoroughly the official apple refurbished Macbook - I bought 1 two days before christmas and it arrived 22 hours later! Still has1 year
guarantee and was £180 cheaper than list new price. They are available through the apple store, the site is updated daily at 10ish but the bargains
go quickly! JC

Packard-Hell ?
Sounds like a "Windows Respray" plus extra memory is required.
Download Mint Linux and burn it to CD and boot it from CD it will run a bit slow but if its feels faster than Windows you can either fix Windows or
install Mint.

And if you like the look and feel of Mint (or Ubuntu, which I use) you can install it as dual-boot, which gives you another chance to run it at full
speed while still having Windoze handy just in case you decide that Linux isn't your thing.
BTW: If you prefer the look and feel of Windoze you might find Kubuntu more acceptable - it's Ubuntu with a different windows manager (KDE)
which is more like the MS system (but a hell of a lot better).

Specifications
2.1GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
1GB 667 DDR2 SDRAM - 2x512MB
120GB Serial ATA Drive @ 5400 rpm
Combo Drive (DVD-ROM/CD-RW)
Keyboard & Mac OS
Any good for me?? Is it a bargain??
