I think the idea of putting the phone down is a bit OTT but yes the request from a garage is cropping up more especially if you have put a smaller
engine in the car as this "could" result in you paying less road fund licence.

I'd take a picture of the engine in situ next to the chassis rail, a picture of engine number and a letter confirming you've swapped the
engines.
Should do it (or ask them for written evidence stating that it has to be from a garage)....

First I've ever heard of that, I regularly swap engines over, not once have I been asked for evidence, what a twat that DLVA guy is. They just
seem to make up any old bo&&ocks they like.

Used to just be smaller engines (as Schrodinger says) but there was a recent post from someone who put a bigger engine in and was told the regs have
changed.

They've now updated their website (since that post) with the new rule.

Yeh I had exactly the same a couple of weeks ago.I got a reciept of the guy who built my engine and asked him to add the info the DVLA asked for:
Headed paper
Engine No.
Exact engine size
Fuel type
Replacement or Reconditioned.
If you cannot get a receipt for your engine sell it to a mate and buy it back again and ask him to write you one.
It took a few weeks to come,so if you need tax get it before you send the form off.
It does not matter if the engine is bigger or smaller, you have to send this info know.
If you always do what you have always done you will always get what you have always got

Change to engine and cylinder capacity (engine size)
DVLA will need written evidence of any changes to engine number and cylinder capacity (cc). Written evidence can be:
a receipt for the replacement engine
ca get that from chap who i bought it from
written evidence from the manufacturer
that aint gonna happen as i changed it
an inspection report provided for insurance purposes
they are happy with the work already
written confirmation on headed paper from a garage if the change in engine size took place before you bought the vehicle
didnt happen before i bought it so not applicable

You will probs have to write yourself a private sale receipt and hope this will be OK. Failing that a friendly MOT place might provide you with
something for a fee. Probs need to know them well though to get it.
Its the headed paper bit that gets me - no use if you buy the engine privately. Dont suppose it was off ebay and you have reciept do you?

No engine number?
I'd worry the engine will need a big radiator seeing as it's red hot!!!

Probabaly best not to bother telling them anything in future then, maybe just stamp the original engine number on it as many manufacturers do for
replacement engines.
