(TINTOP) VW Stereo Release Keys Stuck

Its in a 6N2 (2001) Polo, I fitted the double DIN RCD200 from a 2006 Polo (that plays MP3's) and also added a box from the far east that allows you to play MP3's etc from a USB flash stick or SD card and gives a line in for your Ipod or similar.

Anyway the connection for that must have fallen off when I first put it in.

Finally got the 4 keys I need to release it, put them in and now I can't pull the head unit OR the keys out.

So I got 4x release keys stuck in my dash.

I've pulled them as hard as I can with my fingers (before it felt like they'd get cut off as they are only thin pressed metal) then I put a 1/4" extension bar through each side (vertically) and pulled on those.

Thought I was gonna break the dash.

I think they are the right ones, look like the end of a scalpel rather than square.

Guess I might have to take the dash apart and get something in the side of it?

Meh.

And a broken dash panel / clips!

I was pulling the whole central section of the dash away from its mountings a bit (NOT in the correct way its supposed to be removed!) so I daren't pull any harder!

The original head unit had 2x removal keys that are vertical slots and square ish keys. So you could probably get away with using knives etc.

The newer double DIN uses 4x keys with horizontal slots and different "curved" (rounded scalpel blade kinda) keys.

Its possible I was supposed to use them the other was around (turn 180 degrees like a key). However I wouldn't have thought they would lock in if they were the wrong way around.

The dimples to pull the unit should be inserted facing the unit. If they are facing the cage they will try to pull the cage out of the dash. You may be able to free them by angling them up or down. Otherwise push them in a bit and try to fiddle a thin feeler gauge in between them and the cage. Then pull them out one by one.

At last a sensible reply!

I will give this a go tomorrow, need to find my feeler gauges first, one of those things that goes walk about in the garage.

For some stupid reason these keys can and will go in upside down, Then they get stuck and you have yourself a situation.

As said above, If you fiddle and try to get the keys out you may be lucky. Just try and be patient with them.

As I put the last one in I did think "I hope I've got these in the right way!".

Then as pulling them looked like it was ripping the guts out the dash I really got worried.

What a poop design!
