If it happens exactly as you said it can go one of two ways.
1. All the drivers can claim off the fault parties (ie the guy right at the back) insurance. (avoiding the need to involve their own insurer)
2. All parties claim off their own individual insurance and then the insurers will look to the fault insurer for reimbursement.
If however, for example one person ran into the rear of another, and then someone ran into them and so on, then it gets complicated. What would
happen in that scenario is that the damage to the front car (entirely blame free) would be split (usually 50/50 ish) between the car behind and the
car behind that as they both contributed to the damage. Then the car right at the back would pay for the damage to the middle car and their own front
end damage.

Unfortunately I think that's unavoidable now. Was anyone injured?

I was in a head-tail accident once, in the middle. The guy in front of me claimed damage to me. I had to claim my damage and the damage of the guy in
front of me to the guy behind me.
They told me if I had legal aid, they would make the claims on my behalf, so I didn't have to do anything.

My sister was in a similar type of thing involving about 5 cars and a lorry that rammed the lot of them, the lorry driver got prosecuted and found
guilty so it is really clear cut. That was about 2 years ago and she still waiting for the compensation to be agreed. Lawyers move slower than
glaciers

And in turn rack up a pile of cash as big as glacier - not that I'm suggesting they'd ever drag things out unneccesarily!!
