No spark on GSXR1100WP

Hi there,

I have just got to the point where I want to start the engine. All very exciting.

I don't seem to be getting any spark. My loom is homemade, but I am fairly confident that I have the right wires going to the right connections.

Does anyone have any clues on how I can test components of the system.

How do I test whether the signal generator is doing its job?

Can I put a bulb across the outputs to the coils (instead of the coils) to test that the right voltages are coming through.

My only other concern is that I am supposed to supply a lower voltage to CDI/ECU/ignitor unit than I am (12v rather than using a resistor), but I think this is only for later models.

I only have 7 connections to the CDI, so it can't be too complicated. The problem is that all my bits are old and from random sources (CDI from sidecar guys, engine from e-bay, etc etc.) so I need some module tests!

Any clues would be appreciated.

Are there any lockouts on the ECU wiring you may have overlooked? Side stand, clutch, neutral light etc??

I am not using the standard wiring. The loom is built from first principles.

There were lockouts on the original loom, but they were pretty crude. Basically certain conditions needed to be met for the CDI to be supplied with power.

There are 8 connections to the CDI:


12V, to unit, this also goes out to the coils
Coils 1&4 out
Coils 2&3 out
Tachometer output

Feed from signal generator
Other feed from signal generator
Earth
Dummy (not connected inside CDI unit)


I thought it was idiot proof, but am discovering that it isn't ;-)

Not complicated like the later models of bike. I would like to be able to test the signal generator which is a fairly simple, and I am trying to get hold of another CDI.

If using bike battery check it's in tip top condition, or use a car battery for testing purposes.

If the battery is struggling to turn the engine over it will not spark.

Thanks Shandy good thought.

Presently plugs are out, and it turns around very quickly. It is a brand new battery and spends most of its life on an Oxford Optimiser with the green light on.

I will check the voltage drop when cranking, as it is cold, cold, cold at the moment.

Any idea what the signal from the crank sensor should look like? I will grab an oscilloscope before I go home.

Thanks Martin,

Mine is actually a WP. I have the diagram too from the workshop manual.

The earlier ones (like mine) are simpler.

No wheelie wire or ignition resistor (I believe).

Spark seen.

Turns out my CDI is non-standard. I had to swap the leads from the signal generator. The earth was a bit rubbish too which turned up when I was testing voltages and resistances (thanks Shandylegs for this).

As ever once it worked it was all really simple. Now to get some fuel in ;-)
