Bike licence and tests

I know ive touched on this before but looking for a reminder please.

Ive had full car licence for ages. I have cat P which i believe means i can ride a moped on roads without L plates.

If i want to do the CBT, do i need some sort of bike provisional licence?

CBT - i assume i can do this even if i have never been on a bike before. Is that right?

What comes next? Would i need to buy a 125cc bike and get some practice in on L plates before doing the rest of the test?

What is this new test all about? Have i made it all harder for myself by waiting to look into bike tests?

I want to sell them - not ride them

Just figured it isnt a good look if you want to sell them but cant even ride one!

When did you pass you car test. After a certain date (2001) you have to take training before riding a moped. Before 2001 you didn't have to.

Yes, you need a CBT. You should have done it last year as they have now changed the test and it's longer and more expensive now.

Best option is the DAS (Direct Access). Usually the cost includes CBT, training, bike hire and test fees. I've heard quotes of about £800 for the new style whereas it used to be about £500 on the old style. Assuming you pass you will be able to ride whatever you want with no restrictions.

As speed says, it's just changed to the new system.

I did this two years ago. Because I'd passed my car test before 2001 I could ride a 50cc without L plates, but that doesn't help you much as you still need to take the test on a 125 if you ever want the resulting licence to convert into a big bike licence.

So I did a CBT (£99 using someone elses bike) bought a 125 four stroke, and taught myself for two or three months, then took the test (£60 IIRC) I was restricted to 33bhp for 2 years. I've just sold the old 125 actually, depreciation was only £300 over the whole two years.

The alternative is DAS, as speed says, and it sounds like you might need it if you want to sell 33bhp+ bikes immediately.

Oh, and I still had to do the electronic theory and hazard perception tests despite having my car licence for over 15 years. That part was fun though.

thanks all.

Ive just been to a rider training centre and they have quoted me £575 for the DAS including CBT, bike hire etc etc. Unlimited lessons within 3 month period. Only extra was £31 for the hazard perception and theory.

They made it all sound very straight forward. Even said if i only wanted to do CBT as a taster to riding bikes i could do that on its one for £115, if i liked it then just pay the extra to drop onto the direct access course.

£575 sounds like a lump of cash to pull out at once but for what you get isnt too bad at all. They were talking of 2 lessons a week at around 2 - 3 hours each over the 3 month period.

The scary bit is that at the end of it you can go out and be legal on a superbike! (insurance permitting of course!).

Something to think about. Ive never fancied a bike before but have a mad idea to sell some so worth knowing about them for my own piece of mind especially if we get into assembling from crates and PDI testing.
