SVA retest tomorrow...

Well, I'm prepared as I ever will be I suppose. Just worried that it's still not quiet enough and the brakes are still horribly squishy - it only failed on balance last time rather than efficiency so I have unpinned the balance bar and will take a drill and repin after the test. I'm just hoping that they will firm up a bit as they bed in.

If I lose out again on the noise test I'll really be all out of ideas

Nick

All the best!

What steps have you taken to reduce noise?

Mine was 104dB so I'll read your reply with avid interest!

may be a bit late but there is a guy on here (chris_smith) offering an 86db silencer for SVA...(see for sale ads) .. but I suppose your mind had already been down that path?

Not easy to swap silencers as the Dax silencer has the cat and 4-1 collector built into it.

To reduce the sound I lined the engine compartment with 20mm sound deadening, added sound deadening pads to all the ally panels in the cockpit, put a decibel insert in the silencer, added a cone baffle to the tailpipe and filled the tailpipe with wirewool.

I think the real problem with the Dax exhaust is the 2.5" tailpipe is like a megaphone. The combination of the decibel insert and the cone baffle has quietened it down considerably but as I failed at 107dB last time I'm going to need every bit of it.

Well, passed on everything but o/s mirror. My new mirrors passed the mirror test fine, however they just miss the minimum vertical dimension by 5mm. Kind of ironic that the old mirrors easily passed the minimum dimensions but failed the actual mirror test, now I have some that pass the test, they fail on dimensions

Anyway, sound came in at 100.2dB so that was good. He said it was actually 102dB in the 6k range but was much quieter at 7800rpm where he tested me.

Brake balance passed, speedo passed thanks to the firmware update from ETB, the extra steering column support he asked me to put in passed, everything else was great.

So now I need to find a mirror, hopefully with an M8 stem, that passes the minimum dimensions.

Well done - is it going to be 3rd time lucky?

Just be thankful you are SVA retesting - £30 a shot? Because IVA retesting is £90 a pop.

I think the Idea is to get the amateur builders to dot all the i's and cross all the t's precisely and get it 'right first time' otherwise its going to cost us dear! (as well as being another 'hidden tax' )

Sorry, I'm still seething!

Get you mirrors sorted and get out on the road and enjoy!
Steve.
