Towing dolly-BEC reversed on?
Hello all,
Am waware of the legal implications of a towing dolly, but was wondering if I was to get one would itbe better to have the rear (driven) wheels off
the ground to prevent diff wear etc, or to have the front wheels off the ground?

In part i guess it depends on the geometry of the front end (steering axles) but think i would be for puting the front wheels on the dolly
reguardless of diff ware, which under no-load conditions will be minimal anyway unless theres a problem with the diff already.

I wouldn't want to have the rear wheels steering, it could wander all over the road.
Best bet is to use them how they are meant to be used.
And you say its to prevent diff wear, personally I don't think thats a consideration for just a few miles being towed

I thought the problem of towing a RWD BEC was not diff wear but gearbox wear. With the engine off, there's no oil pressure. Even in neutral,
half of the gearbox is connected to the prop so all 6 gears are turning at a speed proportional to the road speed. The gears are not bathed in oil.

I would still have thought there s enough oil in the gearbox splashing about and its a NO load situation for it not to be a problem

When I sold my Locost rolling chassis, there was no diff in it so the shafts were loose in the axle casing. When the guy picked it up he had a dolly.
The only option was to put the rear wheels on the dolly and the fronts on the ground with the car facing backwards. He tied the steering wheel to the
cage. He was going from South West Wales to Tyneside............!
