is my diff broke?

Evening lads, i pushed my car out the garage today to see 2 small drips of thick oil where the rear of the car was on the floor, checked under the car and it was all fine so i took it out for a 30 minute drive.

Now take note i have just fitted a much quiter exhaust so i can now hear every little creek and rattle but my diff sounded really noisy when holding a steady high speed. the car also jerked more at low speeds, more than normal.

\ive jacked the car up and had a poke at the 3.62 lsd with bolt on shafts and i think ive found the problem but as i know nothing of diffs im unsure if its a rebuild job or adjustment only.

i will try and explain the part, the drive shaft is bolted to it, im ashuming its the part thats splined and goes into the diff but if i grab it and wiggle it there is play, if this is a bearing fitment then there is way to much play. so has the bearing gone or can i just tighten up the toothed bearing housing thingy lol. if i need to rebuild can i do it with the diff still in the car?

You may have caught it before its destroyed itself. Sounds like the bearings are either too loose or need replacing. Hopefully it hasn't knackered the lsd and it should be easy to replace the bearings, do both sides as well though.

To replace the drive shaft bearings is definately a diff out job, as the complete diff, other than the pinion, has to be stripped out. After you have renewed them you will have to adjust the backlash on the crown wheel, so will need a dial clock. Even if it's just a bearing adjustment job, you will still need to take the diff out of the car, as that will change the backlash. Right PITA job, but has to be done. I have the diff overhaul details on the computer, and can email them to you if you want, just send me a U2U. Cheers Ray

Thanks lads

Just to add, the one side moves up and down and front to back but there is no play in or out.

Can I just try tightening that side with the diff still in the car or am I risking more damage with regards to backlash? If anything tightening that side would increase backlash (it’s the drivers side that wobbles).

If not where is the best place to get the bearings from? will a local motor factors have them or is special places only and is it silly to just do these or should I go the whole hog and rebuild the lot (as a kit)?

Suggestions welcome.

Ps, the only reason I don’t want to remove the diff is getting to the prop bolts and risking rounding them off! As I had great trouble when removing the engine over xmas due to these bolts at the front connection.

I was convinced that I had a diff on its way out because I found play on the r/h ouput flange of my lsd diff was also experiencing nosies that I thought were unusual,fitted a differnt diff and had exactly the same and found out that there is normally play on the right had output flange, refitted my original diff with new oil once I checks the bearings etc and hasn't missed a beat for 2000 miles.I've since also fitted a trt prop and this has cushened the noises a bit but I think diff noise is normal on a bec with a lsd, especfially with an aluminium sheet clad transmision tunnel which tends to amplify noise.

Argh eddbaz! Lol

Now you have me thinking it might all be ok but might need the oil checking.

Can I removed the rear diff cover and check backlash and output bearings with it still in the car? Obviously the oil will jump out at me when the cover is removed but I can live with that.

In answer to that question, yes you can. There should be virtually zero backlash, as its only a couple of thou from memory. HTH Ray
