Quick I.T question
mate has given me his laptop to have a look at, he says its really slow and it takes forever to connect to the internet etc, ok i'll have a
look, i said.
did a malware scan and found a few trogens which i got rid of and seems to be running ok but came across a small problem, i can't move any files
or documents about, i tried clicking and dragging them from one window to the next, but nothing, then clicked the file to highlight it and got a
'move this file' option in the side bar, click it and got a menu box to select the destination file, found the file i wanted it to go to
and clicked ok.........nothing! files not moved anywhere, still sat there taking the micky.
is running xp
any ideas?
cheers guys

How much spare disk space do you have? Windoze uses a fair chunk as temporary workspace, usually allocated as a percentage of what's available.
If the disk is running out then the available temp space is reduced, and WIndoze has to work much harder - to the point where it doesn't do
anything much.
SO...
1. Check the disk space - if there isn't much left, think about deleting unnecessary stuff, uninstalling software you never use, run the disk
cleaning utility to remove old cookies and temporary files.
2. Defragment the disk.
3. Check for viruses and malware.
4. If everything else is OK - consider reloading the operating system.
Or do what I did - loaded Linux!

Problem is that often trojan files replace system files and take their names, possible that your antivirus software has deleted one of the important
system files causing a problem. Best option is to try and run a recovery tool if he has any disks, OR, the expensive route would be to
re-install/install the operator or new operator software. HTH

You could try at a command prompt:
sfc /scannow

If you have that much trouble - BLITZ windows and re-install. SHould only take about an hr.
Especially if it is riddled with MALWARE and VIRUS.... Careful if you back up the data as well you could COPY the VIRUS....
If you go to the LAPTOP manufacture's website you should be able to down load all the drivers for that particular machine. (Depends on Manuf)

I hardly ever bother to do a scan in windows. You need to boot with a clean Operating system and scan from that.
There are Linux CD's out there that allow you to do virus scans without windows.
