Bah. Everythings going wrong...... (Diesel passat)

First, the tin top loses power.
Second, it takes me all day to fit and wire a new bathroom fan.
Third, when I turn the power back on the boiler refuses to restart. It would seem that I have blown a cicuit board and the gas man can't come til tomorrow. Who knows when the parts can be delivered.

Well at least I know somewhere to get help with the car!! It is a 2001 1.9tdi PD Passat. The power has just vanished. No whirring or whooshing noises, no smoke, no other unusual noises. Just a lack of power. It got me home ok but I was slowing on hills which normally would have been a breeze. Any idea's gratefully received.

Usually get little fuses on boiler boards, worth having a looksee before you commit big money

Exactly the same happened to one of our contractors at work. A hose had failed/fell off or sommat on his turbo. Didn't cost too much to fix.

sounds like a turbo problem... check the recirc valve. my dad had the same thing happen to his car, and it was cause the recirc valve had rotted from the inside and blown through.
ended up with no power

My boiler did the same when I powered it off it wouldnt start checked everything not a spark, called out a plumber who took on elook said ah just as I thought and hey presto all working. He found a reset switch under the boiler pressed it and that was that £25.00 for pushing a button. Have a good look round it my reset button is underneath the boiler

With regards to the car it sounds as if its in 'limp mode', this normally happens when you have a faulty sensor or unit on the engine. Get to a garage and have a fault memory check carried out. Should point you in the right direction.

The car could well be the air flow sensor, they're a common fault on any electrically controlled diesel with Bosch management. It doesnt put any lights etc on, you just get no go! Often knocking the engine off & then back on clears it for a while.

MAF sensor is thew most common cause of the symptoms you describe. Unplug it and see if it improves. Turbo pipes have also been known to split loosing power.

As it's a VW I'd bet on it being the 2nd option.

If the car goes better with the MAF disconnected then it's likely to be that thats faulty. Had a Golf a few weeks ago with the same problem , cleaning the exhaust recycling valve with carb cleaner cured that one . If there are no noises then it's unlikely to be a split turbo hose , a rough test for turbo operation is to rev the engine while pressing a turbo hose, you should feel it expand '

I've had the turbo pipe problem before and that was accompanied by a distinct noise of escaping air and smoke from the exhaust. Nothing like that now. There are no other symptoms at all which lends credence to it being an ecu intervention but with no lights on the dash. Ah well off to the garage for a laptop diagnosis.

Faulty MAF sensor rarely puts the MIL light on. Unplug it and it'll go into limp home (and put MIL on) but will run better than with it connected if it's faulty.

Clean it with carb cleaner will sometimes act as a temporay fix.

If it's 'always' got no poke rather than keeling over when loaded my money would be on MAF.

Try unplugging it (5? way plug on the air intake just down from the airbox), this on most tdi's forces the engine into a 'default' mode for fuelling based on engine speed and throttle. if it drives better then that's your likely culprit.

Also try filling it up with some good diesel, just in case you got a bad bit of that..

Exactly the same happened to me the other week (same age of car as well)

The boost pipe from the intercooler to the inlet manifold had worked loose, as the retaining clip had snapped. The replacement clip was about 90p from VW. I called them to order the parts and there are two sizes - I just got them to order 2 of each size, it came to £3 for all of them, 30 second job to fix....
