Got my Engine!!!
Well got my R1 engine lastnight. Had to pick it up from the airport cause the courier company "forgot" to load it in the van
Have to say a BIG thanx to Colin (colibriman) for the engine.
He's a top bloke. He called me 5 or 6 times to see whether it had arrived yet, and when it got to bout 5pm he called the courier place (Intial
citylink) and found out wat had happened for me.
When i got the engine home it was amazin!! Not only did he make a very sturdy mdf box, he had every part wrapped and labelled. The '98 R1
engine only has 13000 miles and looks sweet.
Would recommend Colin to every1. Now all i need is my Kit Fingers crossed for Tuesday!
Cheers

I got an R1 too - the manual is available free online somewhere, and it says use the recommended oil or the clutch will slip, in particular
don't use synthetic car oil! See what yamaha recommend.
cheers
Bob
Argh - that completely disagrees with "snoopy". It would be nice to not find out the truth of the matter the hard way.. any users out
there??

Best oil to use is Red Line fully synthetic, never both with semi synthetic as most of it is rubbish.
Red Line is not the cheapest but it's excellent and used by many BEC's, as one the Yahoo BEC site for the chap who sells it.
The oil has to work harder in BEC's cos of the sidesways G's that don't happen it a bike mounted engine ('cause of the
'lean'.

Don't use GTX Magnatec or ANY Car specific oil, it needs to be suitable for bikes with wet clutches ("SG" rated I think).
Also dont overfill it as that will make the clutch slip as the bottom of the clutch will be sitting in a bath of oil and so cant squish it all out
when the clutch closes. Ive always use Castrol R4 fully synth bike oil and have never had any slip up until I ran it in my "new" 97 blade
engine on Friday at Anglesey. Despite a new clutch I still got a bit of slip, so from experience and also that of others, I think that the engines are
very picky with oil, and those that work fine in some engines, dont work well in others.
To clean it up, the only thing Ive found to work is the usual degreaser fluids and lots of elbow grease

yip castrol R4 is what we use in some bikes but more and more bikes are better off just using a semi 10/40,especially suzuki's.
some of the side car guys say put an extra 200-300 cc's in R1 engine ,so thats what iv done to mine

Ditto OX
When I was building mine I followed Ox's advice and have never seen the oil light come on. Also I've not had any clutch slip but I have
done the mod that the guys over the pond do www.r1-forum.com
and fit another diaphram spring.
Good luck with the build!!!
