Locost / home made ipod speakers
I fancy making some speakers for the lounge for my ipod. I have looked on the net and can't find any UK info. Small bookshelf speakers would be
ok or a single unit like the Bose system.
If successful i would like top build some quality hifi speakers.
One thing that i thought was to buy some cheap ipod speakers and rip the plastic casing apart and build my own quality wood unit.
Any ideas, links appreciated.

There are dozens of plans available is you google "DIY Bookshelf speaker" or similar e.g.
http://diyaudioprojects.com/Speakers/DelSol/
http://www.facstaff.bucknell.edu/esantane/movies/hatt.html
However, the dimensions are designed around specific drivers with known parameters. Putting a random driver unit into one of these designs will very
likely not provide optimal results.

If you are using an Ipod won't the speakers need to be active or else you will also need an amplifier.

Avoid tiny 5cm drivers if you want any real bass from it. 17cm car speakers are cheap and can be passable for a compact system. Hi-Fi drivers cost
more. I'd be tempted to buy something second hand rather than make unless you want the joy of making it.

Yes the speakers will be active and i was thinking of dismantling a unit (maybe used) and building it myself for the fun of building it!

Will you have to buy materials, or have you already got wood?
