LDV Convoy rear hub seal
Hi
I have had experience of rear hub seal and wheel bearing failing on a regular basis and was only solved by changing to a 2nd hand axle.
The extra extra long wheel base has a failed hub seal. Although the seal is £10 part, is there anything else I should check for?
There are signs that it has been repaired in the past, new shoes, clips, and instant gasket on half shaft bolt flange. Wheel bearing is ok.
What are my options? replace seal and wait and see or swap axle from a scrapper in our yard? Short of time to do this.

Side shaft bent? if it wasnt running true it would cause premature failure.

Have that thought at the back of my mind. How would you check it? Wheel bearing is ok so don't think it would be bent shaft. Thinking its more
to do this the quality/fitting of the seal.

They leak all the time. Check the axle where the seal runs is clean. Also check the breathers not blocked. There is a modified seal aswell if i
remember rightly. Make sure the hub goes on square and u have put a bit of grease on the seal lip.

Sounds as though the housing is bent.
This would put a twisting load on the bearings and seals, and can lead to broken axles if bent far enough.

thanks guys.
Cleaned breather and put it all back together better than the last repair. Fingers crossed.
On topping up diff oil noticed it had a metallic look. On previous experience of these seals failing we suspected fault in diff or something bent.

If the metal cack gets up to the seal it would soon knacker it.
