Hanging an engine hoist..
All,
I've just bought myself an Aldi electric hoist - nice bit of kit. My dilemma is how to hang it. Hopefully someone here will have a clever
solution:
I've got an 8x4" beam spanning across the garage, so I'd like to hang it off that, directly or indirectly.
The hoist mounts are two U clamps, the opening of which is 2" (accepts both round and square profile), and the bolt hole centres are 9cm
apart.
Any ideas must involve only bits purchasable from B&Q/Jewsons/ebay (i.e. I can't cut/make anything out of steel), and must be *proper*
locost!
Thanks,
Pavs

Incidentally, I've got a lot of 6x2" wood that is waiting to be used if there's any way of adapting that!

Here's how mine is mounted.
Those are skateboard wheelbearings off ebay.

cant help with your problem but i bought one a while back and with the cable doubled it lifted my saab engine/box no problem around 250kg. i use a
scaffold tube running opposite to my roof joists 6x3 and move the car out of the way once lifted.

Cheers for that, but that won't work in mine unfortunately.
My beam runs across the garage, not lengthwise, and it's by itself (i.e. I can't span anything between it and another beam)
Thanks,

can you drill steel tube? If so, attach the hoist to about 2 foot of 2" square tube, drill a few holes, and simply use massive wood screws to
hold it up to the beam. I mean about 6" 12g screws.

I can drill steel indeed, and that was my first idea, but I have to say I'm not 100% confident in hanging the whole thing off screws going Up
into the beam without any sort of positive support!
Cheers, keep em coming!

I don't have a posh electric hoist, just a Terfor winch, but the way I have mine fitted would be just as good for a leccy one. I fitted a piece
of 50mm x 50mm x 6mm angle to the bottom of a joist, (100 x 50), which crosses the garage side to side and screwed it up every 8" with 3" No
12 screws, then fitted a hoop to the middle to attach the hoist. This has been used several times to lift the Cosworth V6 fitted in my car, ( bloody
heavy lump). Will get a picture and attach it so you can see what I mean. HTH Ray

To make a car go faster, just add lightness. Colin Chapman - OR - fit a bigger engine. Chippy
