Modern light engines for longitudinal use?
Does anyone know any good donor sources of modern engines/gearboxes of engines suitable for mid engined longitudinal fitting? I'm after
something lighter than the traditional chevy imports - around the 300hp mark...

plenty of engines spring to mind if you can sort the gearbox.
Saab 2.3, Volvo T5,
Porsche with transaxle maybe?

Surely something from Audi would fit the bill - something from a model with longitudinal engine installation and a FWD only transaxle would do it and
there's certainly engines capable of the +300bhp figure.

Forgot to add a key point! I need to be able to source a sequential box for it... Anything available for the audi's? DSG box I suppose?

Yeah a DSG VAG set up would be ideal!!! Highly tuneable, you could even go for a diesel

Not sure if there's a longitudinal FWD transaxle with DSG, but as DSG seems to be an option on most Audis (and other VAG cars) I can't see
why there wouldn't be. Might make for interesting electronics getting everything to work properly once ripped out of a donor car. More and
more components are coded to each other and the car these days with multiple ECUs and bus type wiring systems

Yes the engine could be run on MS, but the DSG could be tricky!
My list so far:
RST-V8 - Cost?
1uzfe - Don't know much about this engine...
Audi RS4 V8 - Looks like a good option...

I know the Subaru 4WD box has been modded to use that way,
the flat4 or the flat6 engine could be used.

From Toyota v8 1uz-fe or v6 2gr-fe
Also LS series engines from chev (a lot lighter than the older cast iron small blocks)
Would probably have to decide on a gearbox first and work back from there, but adapter plates can be made for any engine.

The 4 litre 1uz-fe is a very good engine but doesn't match up directly to any manual gearbox. It needs an adapter plate and a custom
flywheel/clutch assembly.
Power wise it's about 288hp from stock, 500 hp is possible with no internal modifications and forced induction. Above that depends on the year
of the engine- the pre 95 engines only need to have new pistons and they can make 1000hp (again with forced induction). The head of the 1uz
doesn't breathe very well, so is not so good for NA applications, however it is mental for FI. It has a forged crankshaft, 6 bolt main bearings
and has been known to make 400,000 miles.

I should also point out it is bulky though- effectively 800mm square without gearbox.
