R1 Engine ECU help?
Hello All,
I am building an R1 FWD engined mini and have trouble geting the damn thing started!
Well after being led up the path by a faulty compression gauge I now have the head rebuilt and ready to roll.
I tried starting today and geting nothing apart from odd pop from exhaust now and then. It was rebuilt with timing marks all aligned with cams facing
correct direction etc as in manual.
Now the ECU has had everything cut out. The only things I have connected are as follows:
1) Coils
2) Crank sensor
3) Throttle position sensor
4) Alternator and regulator
5) A triangular shape connector I cant remember relavnce of???
I am getting a spark at the plugs and can smell fuel but if the plugs are firing correct or something alse stopping is another matter.
ANy help much appreciated, if no idea I will try a few other forums but know we have a few BEC veterans here
Cheers,
Colin

Is it a standard loom that you have stripped back?
what have you done with the wiring for the stand switch, and the tip-over sensor? if you have just chopped out those 2 circuits, then the engine wont
start

Have you got the plugs in the correct order? What model year is it?

That will probably be the speed sensor
But if ur getting fuel and a spark I would say u got the plugs in the wrong order as MK9R says
Try them the other way instead of 1234 try 4321

thanks people.
I havent done anything with stand sensor as using sperarate starter circuit and thought all that did was drop out starter motor?
Sparks are orangy not bright blue but thought most modern ignition systems are this way.
I have not done tilt sensor either but thought these were on newer bikes (mine 2001)
I have changed coil 12v connections around to see if that was issue but still nothing. I will try reversing plugs but have startede from No1 left hand
side if it was in the bike and seated over it.
I also have no exup connected etc but thought that would just cause stability rather starting probs?
Cheers

Stand sensor will cut the engine, have a search on here as I am sure the correct wires to retain are mentioned, you need to earth this one, also
better to keep the exup, although not in the exhaust it just needs to be present.

Thanks for the input people I have looked at wiring diagram and the clutch/stand switch only go back to starter relay so have now way of affecting
the ECU I can see. I will have a better look later though. The exup is just left disconnected so could be causing a problem so will wire that in and
try again.

My 5jj lump ran fine without the exup valve (though I've now fitted a module to simulate it anyway)
I've also done away with the clutch, sidestand and neutral cutoffs with no probs.

Cheers Lads,
The diagram shows the only thing that the switches mentioned above affects is the starter circuit. I have bypassed this as have my own starter
circuit.
I will try switching the plugs as mentioned but need to get new battery first as it's shot at present!
I will stare at the diagrams for a bit longer tonight and check I havent missed an input from starter relay box into ECU.
If it doesn't start I may just samsh it up, jumo up and down on it then a big fire to finish

Thanks for all the help. New battery and a clean off the carbs and she fired up
Only thing is soon as I backed down to half throttle it dies and after a few good revs it wouldn't start but think that was down to cold start
lever on full.
Now I dont have any pipes connected on carbs bar fuel line. I notice there is a back line off number one inlet so unsure where this should go. Also
small barbed hose on side of carbs along with float chamber vents which are all just open to atmosphere.
Any help much appreciated
Colin
