1600 crossflow compression test 75 psi ..
Hi,
just did compression test on my 1600 crossflow, 75 psi even.
still pulls quite well, whats the ave for a 30 year old engine?
do i upgrade to a zetec or battle on and recondition the crossflow??
what cost???

should be twice that for a reasonable engine.You may have overlooked to have a wide open throttle whilst
carrying out the test.Faulty tester or very badly worn engine.Give you the benefit of the doubt that it pulls well,runs even and doesnt smoke.

Hi
As post above should be twice that figure. Also as above should be done with the throttle held wide open and with the engine warm just to ensure that
the piston rings are free and sealing ( assuming that they are OK ).
If you still get low readings next step is to perform a leak down test. This will establish where the compression is being lost IE past rings down the
bore or through either inlet or exhaust valves. That will then make the judgment on what steps / repairs are likely to be needed.
If it just requires Rings ( may as well do shells / bearings if apart ) Then likely to be around £ 500- £ 700 for rebuild paying for the job to be
done. DIY around £150 - £250 depending how far you go with replacement parts Etc.

Of course the other possibility is the compression tester is poorly calibrated. Could try it on another engine to see.
Even compressions are usually a good sign, but if that 75 is pretty accurate as above it is very low.

The last time i did mine (1600 xflow) they were 165-175 each
dont forget that it should be done with open throttle, to allow air in
I did mine with closed throttle and got about 80!!

If they're even with WOT I'd try a different guage
