Loco's CB500T Cafe Racer build diary

Thought some of you would be interested to see how my latest project progresses.

The locost has been on the road 10 years now and evolved about as far as i can go with it so with winter coming and the boredom of nothing to do setting in i decided a while ago a cafe racer style bike was next.

Next problem was finding a suitable bike, decided from the start it would have to be a twin or single have spoked wheels and most importantly i wasn't going to take a nice bike apart so had to be a bit of a dog.

Found a very rough 1978 CB500 last Sunday at the right price so borrowed a trailer and set of to Norwich to fetch it!

Yes its a nice shade of brown to match the rust was told it hadn't been started for years although it was a good runner when last used guess i will find that out later.

And finally home just in time to get ready for a Sunday night shift....god that was a long day!

Is that an Avon Roadrunner I see before me?
"so had to be a bit of a dog." Think you've managed that part of the brief.
Still a nice period piece from when bikes were bikes and didn't stop or go round corners. Nice alloy petrol tank, matching single seat,clip-ons, hack off any surplus brackets and fit a decent caliper and megaphone exosts and it could be fun. Just a weekends work I reckon.

Keep us updated - and ref the comment above, I'm pretty sure that is MUCH more than a weekends work

Cheated a bit with the first post just to star the thread off,

Made a start on it yesterday, First job see if i could get the old girl running again!
Reccon its been a good few years judging by the state the carbs were in never seen the inside of a float bowl green before so with that done fitted the battery of my scooter sorted some of the wiring out cleaned the points up and put some fresh fuel in!

It surprisingly started quite easily and runs reasonably well

Now i know it runs ive made a start on striping it, will be doing a bit more today so will post up some more pic's later.

Dave.

Starting to look a bit more like the look I'm after....seat brackets cut of frame ready for new seat when I find one or make one.

Going to be slower progress from here as i cant strip it right down to start rebuilding wheels engine ect until the seat and rearsets are sorted, looks like i will be visiting Newark autojumble in a few weeks and looking through ebay quite a bit.

Or Avon Deathmaster as a friend and I referred to them as. He had one on the back of his GT185, and the profile was so square (despite appearing to be relatively new from the tread depth) that he fired the bike up on the center stand and used a surform to "reprofile" the tyre, which apparently worked quite well

It might be worth searching for a Vespa race seat, you can get the fibreglass shell & cover it with padding if you want to.

They will probably be quite locost price wise.

Here's the sort of thing i mean on ebay - Item number: 160660354929

If you do a google images search for 'vespa race seat' it will bring up a few pictures, may not be what you were thinking but when i looked at those pictures you put up, it sprung to mind.

Good luck with the build, i think its going to turn out pretty tasty

Thanks, Just had a look very similar prices to the one i tried to bid on tonight but failed miserably i always bid in the last few seconds so im not tempted to up the price i had decided on, bet you can guess! missed the end by a second or so

This is the one i was going to bid on "LINK"

Would make a plug and mould to do my own but it just doesnt seem worth the time and effort when i can hopefully buy something like that and tweak it a bit to make it just how i want it.
