are there any xbox 360 experts who can help me out?

i recently bought rocksmith for my son while on holiday in the states. got it home and it wont play

wrong region is the error message i get up on screen.

funny thing is i have brought a few games back in the past that work ok

i got grid in 2008 and guitar hero II or III (cant quite remember which one) and these both work fine?

the x box is a uk version and is 2 years old.
any help appreciated.

p.s. i did have my old 360 chipped but not really wanting to go down that route as my son uses x box live

I'm going to guess it's a region one dvd and thus won't play (although why there's regions I don't know)

When you "chip" a Xbox it will play some USA games but non chipped xboxes don't play non pal games. Sometime the game is region free. People don't chip xboxes these days it's a software mod which enables playing backups etc .....

yes been looking through forums for mods etc
found a few that involve flashing the dvd drive.
no problem in taking the x box apart to do this as it is out of warranty

want to be sure that this will cure the region issue and also not affect gameplay on xbox live

and also not completley frig up my xbox

Flashing the DVD drive with third party firmware will get you banned from live eventually. I got away with it for 18 months, but they are always finding new ways to detect firmware changes. I was very careful upgrading dash software, playing games before released etc, but got flagged eventually. I'm a bit out of touch lately with the 360 scene, but a lot of games are region free (so they work in any country), but some games for some reason are region locked like film DVDs.

Does he play online games ? Xboxlive..

If so, I would be careful modding/chipping/flashing the xbox. Microsoft occasionally check for flashed xbox's and then "ban" them from Xbox Live. I know this definitely used to happen and believe it still does.

yes he plays on xbox live so dont want any mods / flash etc to mess that up

the easy answer would be to get the uk version of rocksmith but there is no release date for it as yet.
rumoured to be sometime in 2012??

Yeah, I'm looking forward to Rocksmith, apparently the reason it's not released here yet is that there's a band here called Rocksmith and hence some legal issues....

old consoles used to be region encoded, so that you couldnt bring USA games to UK and vice versa (Japan as well)

new consoles have no forced region encoding, however they do have to ability to force the region encoding if the developer wishes to implement it. as such its a lottery if the games work or not and your best to check the web for which games will work.

flashing the DVD drive with ixtreme will not make your drive region free, only allow you to play pirated games from your region (or backups).

the only possible way you will get that to work is with a JTAG'd console and this is not suitable for xbox live

sorry, you could try selling it on ebay - there will be people in the UK with US consoles (I used to import all my consoles when the 50/60hz tv problem existed)

(Kinda a thread hijack!)

Whilst we're on the topic of xbox's... Does anyone know/is anyone someone who can fix the RROD?
warrenties ran out, and being tight with my money don't really want to spend money if someone has a "mate of a mates girlfriend" who could do it for next to nothing
I live in southampton currently, so if anyone knows someone who can help, please don't hesitate in sending a u2u

Thanks

Sam

easy quick fix is wrap the xbox in a few towels then power it up and leave to bake for a while.
this basically heats up the processor enough to melt the thermal compound and hopefully will reseal it once it has cooled down
did this and my x box worked for another 6 months
next step is to remove the cooling fins / fan and do a small mod on the unit. really easy
u2u me i have the pdf manual for this
worked on my old mx box, i had to do it a couple of times before it finally died.
got another year out of it though

Had RROD on my old xbox 360. There is a kit you can buy on ebay which includes new heatsink bolts and paste.

If you search youtube theres plenty of vids of how to fix it yourself.

Quite easy to do and worth doing yourself if you have the time

Don't wrap it in a towel, you fcuk it up good and proper for any future repairs. it will cause carbon deposits on the GPU/CPU pins. Using the kits off eBay will also work, but only recommend it in conjunction with having the board 'reflowed' in an infared oven or the likes to remake the soldered connections properly. Simply switching the 360 on with no cooling fans connected (eBay special nut/bolt solution) will cause disaster in the long run. U2U me if you need more details.
